TECH FILE: JonRie Debuts New Double Drum Bow Winch
JonRie Marine Winches debuted its new Series 525 Double Drum Bow Winch designed for a 6,770 HP ASD. This winch was designed for Escort operations and Long Line Towing over the stern making it suited for escorting, terminal support, towing and ship assist duties.A new feature on the Series 525 winch are the four independent Hagglunds Drives. The towing drum features a high torque motor with a 100,000 lbs. line pull and an auto abort block to dump the wire in an emergency.
New Double Drum Bow Winch from JonRie
JonRie Marine Winches has launched its new Container Master Series “220” double drum bow winch, currently installed on the tug Independent, a new ASD for Marine Towing of Tampa. The new winch is designed for a larger capacity rope. This concept has been used on the Panama Canal for many years as a redundant line tethered to the ship also acts as an escort bridle, making the tug more stable in prop wash during long escorts. The twin drums also afford less loading on each rope under braking.

New Tug Equipped for US Tonnage Boom
Petchem, Inc. has taken delivery of its new Farrell & Norton 80’ 5,000HP ASD tug from Gulf Coast Steel Boat Builder’s in Bayou La Batre, Ala. Petchem’s new vessel and equipment help prepare East Coast ports for the increased tonnage coming through the canal in the near future. In order to better handle larger containerships calling ports on the U.S. East Coast, the tug features a new Container Master Series winch from JonRie Marine Winches.
JonRie Debuts Container Master Winches
JonRie Marine Winches has introduced its new Container Master Series of winches, featured on the new Crescent 92-foot ASD Mardi Gras. The new winch was designed with increased braking capability and rope capacity to handle the 8,000 TEU containerships calling on the Port of New Orleans, the manufacturer said. The Container Master Series is a heavy duty design to deal with increased loading due to increased sail area of today’s containerships.
Innovative Winch System Patented
The U.S. Patent Office has issued Patent s/n 9,056,655 to inventors Brandon Durar (JonRie Marine Winches) and Gregory Castleman (Castleman Maritime) for A Staple Torque Aligning Winch System for Escort Tugs. Naval architect Greg Castleman approached Durar in the winter of 2007 with the concept of a rotating fairlead for an escort winch which Durar presented the concept to rotate the winch and staple as a single unit.
New McAllister Tug Features JonRie Winch Set
JonRie Marine Winches supplied its fifth ship set of full bollard pull winches to New York’s McAllister Towing for installation on its new tug, Tate McAllister. The 92-foot x 32-foot Z-Drive tug was designed and built by Washburn & Doughty of East Boothbay, Maine. The 6,000-horsepower tug, with a bollard pull of 90 tons, is the latest addition to the McAllister fleet. The JonRie Series 250 escort winch was designed to handle the full bollard pull of the vessel in the recover mode.
