Canton Marine Terminals to Berth Landmark Ship

Wednesday, May 07, 2008
The Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced that a $588,380 per year contract has been awarded to the Canton Marine Terminals of Baltimore for layberthing of the National Historic Landmark vessel N.S. Savannah.  Layberthing is long-term accommodation for a ship at a wharf or pier.  The contract with Canton Marine Terminals has four six-month option periods.   Those option periods include an escalation in payment.
The Savannah, the world’s first nuclear-powered commercial ship, and the only one built in the United States, is currently moored at the BAE Norfolk Ship Repair facility in Norfolk, Va.   The Maritime Administration expects to transfer the ship to Baltimore on or about May 8, 2008.   All nuclear fuel was removed from the Savannah more than 30 years ago.  The Maritime Administration plans to hold a public information meeting soon after the ship’s arrival in Baltimore.
