SNAME Celebrates 115 Years
On May 10, 2008, The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) will celebrate the 115th anniversary of the official adoption of the Articles of Incorporation, which formed the Society. Led by marine industry giants such as William H. Webb, Francis T. Bowles, David W. Taylor and Clement Griscom, SNAME’s original mission, to “advance the state of the art; to afford facilities for the exchange of information and ideas; to disseminate the results of research, experience and information among the members; to encourage and sponsor such research; to cooperate with educational institutions; and to promote the professional integrity and status of the members”, remains as true today as in 1893.
SNAME will celebrate its milestone throughout the year, culminating in the publication of a special “SNAME Turns 115” magazine, produced by Maritime Reporter and Engineering News and dedicated to SNAME members and the marine industry.  Featuring stories from members, historical photographs, and special memories of SNAME and its role in the maritime industry, the publication will trace SNAME’s path of influence, and the careers and anecdotes of individual members, throughout the years.
Members of the Society are encouraged to participate in the important project by sending historical photographs, sharing memories, stories or anecdotes, and testimonials about how SNAME has helped shape the careers of SNAME members.  (Photographs must be at least 300 dpi/jpg preferable.  If sending hard copies, send duplicates as original photos will not be returned.  Provide as much detail, including names of those pictured, as possible.)  Members’ ideas are welcomed; send them to Greg Trauthwein, Associate Publisher and Editor of Maritime Reporter and Engineering News, at SNAME115@marinelink.com by June 1, 2008.
The anniversary will be marked at the SNAME 2008 Annual Meeting, with a “Walk Through the Years” of SNAME history exhibit at the Expo, October 15-17, 2008, in Houston, TX.  Exhibitors will be invited to display company history and contributions to the Society, and the President’s Luncheon on October 17th will feature a celebration for all SNAME members and guests.
The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers is an internationally recognized non-profit, technical, professional society of individual members serving the maritime offshore, naval and small craft industries and their suppliers.  It administers and supports an extensive technical and research program in cooperation with government and regulatory agencies, scientific and research laboratories, academic institutions and the marine industry.
