Mullen Says Navy Faces Shipbuilding Challenges

The Press-Register reported that the U.S. Navy's shipbuilding program faces challenges from cost growth and other issues, Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
Mullen, the former chief of naval operations, voiced concern about growing violence in Afghanistan and said that military officials must do more to encourage troops with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, to seek help.

Bonhomme Richard on Prepares for INSURV

The crew of the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) is in preparation for its Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) inspection, less than a month away.
A team of INSURV inspectors will spend a week aboard Bonhomme Richard starting Nov. 3 to conduct the in-depth inspection of the ship, required every five years.

Pearl Seas Ship in Outfitting

Pearl Seas Cruises’ first ship, which was launched in March, is in its outfitting stage. “It is progressing with over 150 people working on the ship daily at Irving Shipbuilding in Halifax, Nova Scotia” said Vice President Tim Beebe.   The joiner work and the electrical installation are being completed at this time.    The cruise line plans to announce the ship’s name on Thursday August 14th. Pearl Seas Cruises expects the first ship to be delivered in the first quarter of 2009. more

Tanker Company Coats with Intersleek 900

 

A second Aframax tanker belonging to Mumbai-based Mercator Lines, the 105,000 dwt Prem Divya, has been coated with International Paint’s foul release coating, Intersleek 900. The move comes just nine months after sistership Prem Pride had her vertical sides coated with the latest generation patented fluoropolymer at Dubai Drydocks World. This time though, the hull upgrade of the ‘Prem Divya’ involved the entire underwater area of the 1998-built vessel during the tanker’s second special survey.
