ATB Tug Partially Sinks in Port Milwaukee

Multiple agencies are responding to prevent any potential environmental damages after a tug partially sank at its moorings on the Kinnickinnic River in Port Milwaukee.The Coast Guard said its watchstanders at Sector Lake Michigan were notified by the National Response Center at 11:27 a.m. on Monday that the vessel Michigan, part of an articulated tug and barge (ATB) unit, began taking on water and partially sank in 26 feet of water.Photos shared by the Coast Guard earlier this week show the stern of the 115-foot-long tug submerged while its bow remains above the waterline…

New Legislation Aims to Boost Great Lakes Icebreaking Capacity

Auxo Investment Acquires Andrie LLC

Private investment firm Auxo Investment Partners said it is partnering with the Andrie family with an investment in Andrie LLC, a Michigan-based Jones Act bulk transporter of specialty products including liquid asphalt, cement, light oil petroleum products, and calcium chloride throughout the Great Lakes. The deal, terms of which were not disclosed, marks Auxo’s sixth acquisition in 16 months, and builds on the firm’s December 2017 acquisition of M/G Transport Services, a leading dry-bulk transportation and logistics company based in New Orleans.Andrie, founded in 1988, is a company serving the Great Lakes, working extensively with large global customers.

SubM: The Coast Guard IS Still an Option

Not all towing vessel companies are choosing Third Party Organizations (TPOs) for their Subchapter M compliance option. One size does not fit all.Under Subchapter M, towing vessel companies may opt to use TPOs to conduct their audits and surveys instead of inspections by the Coast Guard. While many companies are going the TPO route, many are opting for traditional Coast Guard inspections.As a retired Coast Guard marine inspector, I have always advocated the Coast Guard option to our clients.

Dellner Brakes: Serving Inland and Coastal Waterways Markets

A luffing and trolley travel hoist for bagged material used by two vessel loaders at Lake Charles, Louisiana. The hoists are fitted with Dellner SKP service brakes with mounting stands installed between the hoist motors and the reduction gears. The brakes were also manufactured with extra protection to prevent corrosion from sea water.

Dellner provides a range of clutch and braking products for the inland (brown water) and coastal workboat markets. Dellner products are used in a wide range of workboats including tugs, fishing boats and coast guard vessels. Andrie Inc. Implements FuelTrax

Nautical Control Solutions announced that Andrie Inc. of Muskegon, Michigan is implementing their FuelTrax marine fuel management system on M/V Karen Andrie, a 120 ft tug. “We are always looking for tools and practices that improve efficiency,” said Stan Andrie, President, Andrie Inc. “However, it can be a challenge measuring improvement on a day-to-day basis when our focus is on running the business. FuelTrax will provide us a way to establish an operational baseline and then identify areas where improvements can be made. It will automatically capture data such as throttle and engine RPM settings, fuel burn rates, and vessel location and present the data in reports so we can create a baseline.

Jeffboat Building JAK-Fitted Barge

Amidst the crowd of river barges at Jeffboat, an ACL subsidiary, a new 50,000-barrel asphalt barge for Andrie Inc. stands out. This vessel is 360 by 60 with a 24-ft. molded depth. The barge’s cargo system includes a Fulton Thermal FT-1400-C with a 12m BTU per hour capacity that incorporates 32,500 ft. of 2.5-in. pipe and an insulated deck to keep the cargo at the proper temperature for delivery even while underway. The two 2,500 gpm cargo pumps are powered by a pair of Cummins QSM11-M engines each rated for 355 hp (continuous duty). An additional Cummins QSM11-DM powers a 250 kW electric generator. A 27-ft. deep notch fitted with JAK (articulation socket plates characterizes the stern of the barge. To push the barge the company’s 120-ft.

ACL Secures $15m Tank BargeContract

American Commercial Lines Inc. has secured a more than $15m contract with Andrie Inc. to build an ABS classed 50,000 barrel, double-skinned tank barge. Construction will start in 2007 for scheduled delivery in 2009. The contract also includes an option for a comparable barge which can be exercised by March 1, 2009, with delivery to occur within 18 months.
