Coast Guard IMSARC Demo a Success

The Irish Coast Guard coordinated a successful Marine Search and Rescue demonstration on Saturday 16th July. The exercise in Moville Co Donegal involved some of Ireland’s principal Search and Rescue resources. Participants included Donegal based volunteer Coast Guard units, the Sligo based Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter, Naval ship LÉ Orla,  Air Corps Casa, RNLI’s new Shannon Class All Weather Lifeboat, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, UK Maritime Coastguard Agency, Irish Water Safety, Mountain Rescue Ireland and the Civil Defence. The event included a series of water based safety demonstrations: “Prevention and adherence to basic safety is the key element in minimising loss of life at sea and on our waterways”, concluded SARs Manager Gerard O’Flynn.

Donegal Fishing Boat Nearly Hit by Submarine

Donegal fishermen are counting their lucky stars after a near-miss with a submarine last week. A shocked fisherman has described his close encounter with a submarine, which emerged from the water 200 yards away from his boat. According to a report in RTE Raidió na Gaeltachta Seán Briain, from Machaire Rabhartaigh said he was setting crab pots 14 miles northwest of Tory Island, last Thursday, when he came face to face with what appears to be an Astute-class Royal Navy submarine. “Last Thursday about 11 am we were setting crab pots when we saw the submarine coming from the northwest. It went round in front of us, about 200 yards away,” Sean said.

Blyth Workcats of Canvey Island, U.K. has delivered a new 11-meter dive boat to the Mevagh Dive Center in County Donegal on the west coast of Ireland. The new boat has now begun work transporting groups of up to 12 divers to sites along the Atlantic coast of Ireland where numerous wrecks make it an interesting but challenging region for recreational divers. Varadkar Opens Killybegs Coast Guard Station

Irish Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has today opened the newly-built Coast Guard Station in Killybegs which provides the voluntary crew with top-class accommodation and training facilities. It’s the third new Coast Guard building opened by Minister Varadkar since the election, and a fourth new premises will open at Doolin in the next few months. Minister Varadkar is hoping to open at least one new Coast Guard facility every year for the life-saving Coast Guard volunteers. Minister Varadkar also confirmed that the Coast Guard has commenced a new round of recruitment for radio officers for its three monitoring stations in Dublin, Valentia and Malin.

Ireland's Atlantic Seaboard Battered by 130 KM/H Winds

Latest weather bulletin informs of west to southwest gale force 8 to storm force 10 winds continuing overnight and Monday morning on all coasts of Ireland and on the Irish Sea. Winds will further reach violent storm force 11 at times between Slyne Head and Malin Head. Today's storm will not be unlike the conditions brought by Storm Christine at the beginning of this month. "Wind-wise it'll be similar, and other meteorological parameters are similar. All the potential is there for it to be similar," a Met Éireann spokesperson said.

Island Oil & Gas Wins Two New Licenses

Island Oil and Gas PLC said it has been granted two new licenses offshore Ireland. One license covers blocks in the Southern Slyne Trough. Island Oil, the designated operator, and Lundin Petroleum AB will each hold a 50 percent interest in the newly named Inishmore Licence. The second award is the newly named Inishowen licence in the Donegal Basin. Again, Island is the designated operator with a 40 pct stake, while Lundin will hold 40 pct and Endeavour Energy 20 pct. Island Oil & Gas Begins Drilling Operations

Island Oil & Gas plc has spudded well 48/23-3 at Seven Heads West in the Celtic Sea offshore Ireland. The well is the first in its planned 2006 and 2007 drilling programs. Well 48/23-3 is designed to appraise a possible extension of the Upper Wealden gas sands that are producing gas in the 48/24-6 production well immediately to the east. The well, which is in a water depth of 329 feet, will be drilled to a planned total depth of 3,200 feet TVD ss. Island concluded a Sub-Area Equity Interest Assignment Agreement for the Seven Heads West area with Marathon International Petroleum Hibernia Limited, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Marathon Seven Heads Limited (formerly Ramco Celtic Sea Ltd) in February 2006.
