SENESCO Signs $6.5 Million Barge Building Contract

Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (SENESCO), North Kingstown, R.I., has penned a contract with Barges Unlimited of Fall River, Mass. to construct an 80,000-barrel, 320-ft. (97.5 m) double hull barge valued at more than $6.5 million. Per the agreement, SENESCO will manufacture the largest double hull barge ever constructed in the Northeast. Work is expected to commence immediately and is expected to take up to one year for completion, at which time it will be utilized by Seaboats for transportation and delivery of light oil products.


DH Barge Construction Keeps Yards Humming

The required phase out by OPA-90 regulations of single hulled barges over 25 years old by 2005 is the reason why there is considerable activity in this sector. Many petroleum transportation companies are building new barges and some barges with useful life remaining are being double hulled…so there is a good mix of new construction and renovation


U.S. Barge Delivers Another Double-Hull

U.S. Barge recently delivered another petroleum barge to Harley Marine Services. The Barge Anne Elizabeth, designed by Elliott Bay Design Group, was christened on October 4, 2010 by her namesake, Anne Elizabeth Hall. Barge Anne Elizabeth measures 241 ft x 64.5 ft, with a depth of 23.5 ft. The barge has a carrying capacity of 31,500 barrels. The double-hulled barge is OPA 90-compliant, with vapor collection piping. The barge has two isolated cargo systems


Derecktor Shipyards Chosen By SENESCO For Subcontract

Derecktor Shipyards has been selected by Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Company (SENESCO) to provide construction support on a 140,000 barrel fuel barge project. Derecktor garnered the job as a result of their unique ability to bend one inch thick steel in the compound curves required on the project. Derecktor will build the bow section as well as roll the plate for both the stern and the section just aft of the bow


Conoco To Build New Towboats

Conoco is building four new towboats with innovative safety, environmental and design improvements that set new standards for the inland towing industry. "We are raising the bar for towboat design, machinery and marine systems by constructing American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) class boats," said Karen Stacey, director of Conoco domestic marine. "The four new boats will have double-hulled fuel tanks to reinforce safety and environmental protection."


K-Sea Acquires Integrated Tug Barge Unit

K-Sea Transportation Partners L.P. has acquired the 140,000 barrel capacity double-hulled barge S/R New York and the 8,000 horsepower tugboat S/R Everett. This integrated tug barge unit, built in 2000, had been leased by SeaRiver Maritime, Inc., a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation, from a financial institution. The purchase price of $34 million was financed using available cash and $25 million in borrowings under a new term loan
