Three More Ships Head for Shipbreakers
The Maritime Administration's Captain William G. Schubert announced disposal contracts for three more ships in the James River Reserve Fleet. With the announcement, 37 ship disposal contracts have been awarded since the beginning of 2001, and 24 ships have left the James River Reserve Fleet. "Today marks another day of real progress as we work to address the inherited challenges of the James River Reserve fleet," said Captain William Schubert. "Let me be very clear that we will continue to make progress on this issue and work to get this job done." The three ships, the Santa Isabel, the Mormacwave, and the American Ranger, are all designated "high priority" for disposal by the Maritime Administration (MARAD). Esco Marine, of Brownsville, TX, was awarded the contract to dismantle all three ships. Joining Captain Schubert for the announcement, which was made at the fleet site at Ft. Eustis in Newport News, were Senator John W. Warner and Representative Jo Ann S. Davis. "Following today’s announcement we will only have two ships left in the fleet with hulls in ‘extremely poor’ condition," said Captain Schubert. "I am very optimistic that those ships will be departing in the near future and we will be another step closer to removing these high priority ships from the James River." Senator Collins to Receive Bateman Award
The American Shipbuilding Association (ASA) announced that Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) is the 2007 recipient of the Herbert H. Bateman Award. This award will be presented on Wednesday, June 6th at 6:00 pm during ASA’s Salute to the 110th Congress reception. Senator Collins was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996 and reelected in 2002, and is Ranking Member and former Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. She also serves on the Armed Services Committee.
Navy League President Supports Legislation
In a letter to Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis, Navy League National President Timothy O. Fanning, expressed his strong support and appreciation for the legislation that she introduced to increase shipbuilding construction. The legislation entitled National Naval Force Structure Policy Act (H.R. 5196) states that it should be the "policy of the United States to rebuild, as soon as possible, the size of the fleet of the U.S. Navy to no fewer than 375 vessels in active service
Parcel Tanker Company Agrees to Plead Guilty, Pay $19.5M Fine
The U.S. Department of Justice issued a Press Release stating that Jo Tankers B.V. has agreed to plead guilty and pay a $19.5 million criminal fine for participating in an international cartel to allocate customers, rig bids, and fix prices on parcel tanker affreightment contracts for shipment of specialty liquids to and from the United States and elsewhere. The plea agreement and recommended sentence are subject to court approval. (HK Law)

Long Island Ferry Accident Leaves One Dead
In a freak accident that occurred in the Long Island Sound off the coast off Orient Point, L.I., a 65-ft. tractor-trailer rolled off Cross Sound Ferry's 250-ft. vessel, Susan Ann. Chilean Navy Rescues Ailing French Rower
The Chilean Navy picked up French rower Jo Le Guen from a British container ship after he abandoned his bid to cross the southern Pacific Ocean because of illness, the navy said.
