According to the US Department of Defense, Navy, Northrop Grumman Systems Corp., Charlottesville, Va., is being awarded an $88,153,800 contract to acquire integrated bridge systems and steering/ship control systems, related hardware and associated services. DoD explains that the systems are comprised of chart servers, network interface boxes, flat panel displays, radar systems, navigation software, ship control software, global positioning systems, weather sensors, depth sensors, speed sensors, digital compass systems, ship control display systems and sonar systems. These items represent a modernization upgrade from existing systems currently in use.

The Navy has awarded four Preliminary Design Review (PDR) contracts for the Unmanned Carrier Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike (UCLASS) air vehicle segment. UCLASS will be the first deployed carrier-based unmanned air system. It will provide persistent, unmanned, semi-autonomous, carrier-based Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Targeting (ISR &T) with precision strike capability to support 24/7 carrier operational coverage. The four $15 million firm-fixed price contracts were awarded to Boeing Co., General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc., Lockheed Martin Corp.

Navy contracts have been awarded, amongst others, to Northrop Grumman Systems Corp. to provide LCS mission modules, and to Electric Boat Corp. for Virginia-class submarine spare parts manufacture and procurement. Northrop Grumman Systems Corp., Linthicum, Ms., is being awarded a $9.7m cost-plus-fixed-fee task order for Aperstructures. "Aperstructures" is an Office of Naval Research coined word developed from the concept of incorporating the structural component of an aperture into the load carrying members of a ship's superstructure. The Aperstructures program herein addresses risk reduction for the incorporation of large and small arrays into a notional superstructure. This program will demonstrate the structural integrity of the integrated radar/structure analytically and with verification through testing. The contract shall provide engineering and technical services, including material, in support of the analysis, repair, alteration, maintenance and product improvement on the existing Sperry Marine manufactured IBS and the steering/ship control systems installed on U.S. Navy vessels and at land based test facilities.
