At the time of publication, the first National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV), the Empire State VII, is steadily advancing towards its final delivery to the Maritime Administration (MARAD) and SUNY Maritime College. Let’s be clear—this is a huge win, not only for MARAD, its vessel construction manager TOTE Services, the shipbuilder Philly Shipyard, and SUNY Maritime, but for the future of government shipbuilding.To put this milestone in its appropriate context, it is worth reviewing how we got here.

The U.S. Navy announced it accepted delivery of the next-generation landing craft, Ship to Shore Connector (SSC), Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) 105, March 8.LCACs are built with configurations, dimensions, and clearances similar to the legacy LCACs they replace – ensuring that this latest air cushion vehicle is fully compatible with existing well deck-equipped amphibious ships, the Expeditionary Sea Base and the Expeditionary Transfer Dock. LCACs are capable of carrying a 60-75 ton payload.

The U.S. Navy accepted delivery of the future guided missile destroyer USS Carl M. Levin (DDG 120) from General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Jan. 26.Delivery represents the official transfer of the ship from the shipbuilder to the Navy. Prior to delivery, the ship conducted a series of at-sea and pier-side trials to demonstrate its materiel and operational readiness.“Delivery of this ship will provide critical capacity to our surface fleet today and well into the future,” said Capt. American Cruise Lines Accepts Delivery of American Melody and Announces the Names of the 5th & 6th Modern RiverboatsAmerican Cruise Lines announced it has taken delivery of its newest riverboat, American Melody, from Chesapeake Shipbuilding. The vessel was handed over on time despite various challenges as the Maryland shipyard continued building through the pandemic.Immediately following last week’s successful Sea Trials, the brand new American Melody headed to New Orleans to ready for its inaugural cruise along the Mississippi River, an eight-day New Orleans-New Orleans itinerary.

The U.S. Navy accepted delivery of its first Zumwalt-class destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) on April 24 following Combat Systems Activation.The ship will transition to the next phase of developmental and integrated at-sea testing. This event marks a major milestone of the dual delivery approach for USS Zumwalt, which achieved Hull Mechanical & Electrical delivery from shipbuilder General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works in May 2016. New Kāpena Class Tug Ready to Enter Service in Hawaii.The first of four new ocean-going tugs designed by Damen USA, and built by Louisiana-based Conrad Shipyard, has been delivered to Young Brothers – an independent subsidiary of Foss Maritime. The Kāpena Jack Young completed sea trials in Fourchon, Louisiana and was delivered on August 22, 2018. The new twin-screw tugs are 123-feet in length with a 36.5-feet beam and powered by G.E. 8L250 engines rated at 6,000 horsepower. Designed for high stability and maneuverability, the tug has a maximum bollard pull in excess of 83 metric tons and a top speed of 12.5 knots. In addition, the tugs are EPA Tier 4 compliant - the first tugs in Hawaiian waters to meet the new requirements, and substantially reduced emissions.

Singapore headquartered container carrier Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd. (ONE) has taken delivery of a new 14,000 TEU-class containership from Japanese shipbuilder Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, on July 24, 2018.The new ultra-large containership, One Minato, was built at Imabari’s Hiroshima yard and joins the ONE fleet under sublet from Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd.

The Navy accepted delivery of future guided-missile destroyer USS Ralph Johnson (DDG 114) from shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) Nov. 15. In early September, DDG 114 successfully demonstrated its ship's systems and readiness during a series of at sea and in-port trials for the U.S. Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV). Due to the success of the trials, INSURV recommended the ship be accepted for delivery to the U.S. Navy. "The namesake of this ship is a true American patriot who sacrificed his life for the safety of his fellow Marines and his country," said Capt. The Navy accepted delivery of the future USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10) during a ceremony, Dec. 23. Gabrielle Giffords is the ninth littoral combat ship (LCS) to be delivered to the Navy and the fifth of the Independence variant to join the fleet. The Independence variant is noted for its unique trimaran hull, ability to operate at high speeds and large flight deck size. "We are pleased to receive the future USS Gabrielle Giffords into the LCS class," said Capt. Harrison, commander, LCS Squadron (COMLCSRON) 1. COMLCSRON-1 supports the operational commanders with warships ready for tasking by manning, training, equipping and maintaining all littoral combat ships in the fleet. Delivery marks the official transfer of LCS 10 from the shipbuilder, an Austal USA-led team, to the Navy.

Austal USA’s Expeditionary Fast Transport (EPF) team finalized the delivery of USNS Carson City (EPF 7) to the U.S. Navy during a small document-signing event held onboard the ship on June 24, 2016. The EPF program provides the Navy with a new high-speed intra-theater transport capability. The 338-foot long Carson City is an aluminum catamaran capable of transporting 600 tons, 1,200 nautical miles at an average speed of 35 knots, and is designed to operate in austere ports and waterways, providing added flexibility to U.S. warfighters worldwide.

The U.S. Navy has accepted delivery of future USS Montgomery (LCS 8) during a ceremony on June 23 at the Austal USA shipyard in Mobile, Ala. Marking the official transfer of Montgomery from the shipbuilder to the Navy, delivery is the final milestone prior to commissioning, which is planned for September 2016. “Today marks a significant milestone in the life of the future USS Montgomery, an exceptional ship which will conduct antisubmarine, surface and mine countermeasures operations around the globe with ever increasing mission package capability,” said Capt.

The U.S. Navy has accepted delivery of future USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), the lead ship of the Navy's next-generation of multimission surface combatants, May 20. DDG 1000 is tailored for sustained operations in the littorals and land attack, and will provide independent forward presence and deterrence, support special operations forces, and operate as an integral part of joint and combined expeditionary forces. Seaspan Corporation has accepted delivery of a 14,000 TEU containership new build, the YM Warmth. The new containership, which was constructed at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., is Seaspan's sixth 14,000 TEU SAVER design containership and eighth delivery in 2015. The YM Warmth will commence a 10-year, fixed-rate time charter with Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. Yang Ming may extend the charter for up to an additional two years. The ship is the sixth of a total of eight 14,000 TEU SAVER design vessels to be chartered by Seaspan to Yang Ming. The delivery of the YM Warmth expands the company's operating fleet to 85 vessels.

Seaspan Corporation has announced  that it accepted delivery of a 4,600-TEU containership, the MOL Efficiency. The containership was constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. in 2003 and expands the Company's operating fleet to 71 vessels. The MOL Efficiency is on charter to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (MOL) under a two-year, fixed-rate time charter. The ship is the sixth of a total of eight vessels to be chartered by Seaspan to MOL.

The first Mobile Landing Platform ship, 'USNS Montford Point' (MLP 1),  built by General Dynamics-NASSCO,  accepted in San Diego, Calif. The Mobile Landing Platform is a new class of ship and highly flexible platform that will provide capability for large-scale logistics movements such as the transfer of light and heavy vehicles and equipment from sea to shore. "MLP-1 has gone from concept to delivery in under five years, a remarkable feat reflecting the diligent work of the Navy and shipbuilding team from design through testing and trials," said Capt.

The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI) has accepted delivery of the 80 T bollard pull OSV “M.V. SCI Mukta”. SCI had signed contracts for acquisition of four newbuilding with Bharati Shipyard Limited, India. The first two vessels, “m.v. SCI Panna” and “m.v. SCI Ratna” were delivered to SCI last year. “SCI Mukta” is the third vessel of the series. The fourth vessel is scheduled for delivery by June 2012. The latest vessel has a gross tonnage of 2,039 tonnes and deadweight of 1,966 tonnes, classed with IRS and been built to comply with the latest and most stringent international regulations. In the offshore sector, SCI presently has a fleet of 12 vessels of which 9 vessels were acquired during the mid eighties.

Seaspan Corporation announce that it accepted delivery of a 13100 TEU containership, the COSCO Faith. The new containership, which was constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., is Seaspan's second delivery in 2012 and expands the Company's operating fleet to 67 vessels. The COSCO Faith is on charter to COSCO Container Lines Co., Ltd. ("COSCON") under a twelve-year, fixed-rate time charter. The ship is the sixth of eight 13100 TEU sister ships and the 16th of a total of 18 vessels to be chartered by Seaspan to COSCON. Seaspan is a leading independent charter owner and manager of containerships, which it charters primarily pursuant to long-term fixed-rate time charters to major container liner companies.

Seaspan Corporation (NYSE:SSW) accepted delivery of a 4250 TEU containership named the CSAV Lebu from Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (YZJ) on June 4, 2010. This is Seaspan's tenth delivery in 2010, expanding the Company's operating fleet to 52 vessels. Compañia Sud Americana de Vapores (CSAV) of Chile accepted delivery of the CSAV Lebu on June 7, 2010. The vessel is on charter to CSAV under a six-year, fixed-rate time charter. It is the last of four 4250 TEU sister ships to be chartered by Seaspan to CSAV, and is the last of fourteen vessels delivered from YZJ to Seaspan.

The new Washington State ferry Salish is completing builder’s sea trials in Puget Sound. The vessel is expected to begin serving the Port Townsend-Coupeville route this summer, restoring full two-boat service to the route for the first time since 2007. Contractor Todd Pacific Shipyards is conducting sea trials to demonstrate the vessel to U.S. Coast Guard and WSDOT Ferries Division (WSF) inspectors before WSF accepts delivery of the vessel. The Navy officially accepted delivery of the future USS Dewey (DDG 105) Aug. 17 from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB) during a ceremony in Pascagoula, Miss. In June, the guided-missile destroyer completed a combined Builder's and Acceptance trial, also called "super trials," after spending three days in the Gulf of Mexico. "This is the second DDG we've delivered this summer," said Capt. Pete Lyle, DDG 51 class program manager in the Navy's Program Executive Office, Ships (PEO Ships). The future USS Dewey is the 57th destroyer in the Arleigh Burke class and is scheduled to be commissioned in December. Designated DDG 105, the new destroyer honors Adm. George Dewey who is best known for his valor during the U.S. victory in the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

The Navy officially accepted delivery of the future USS Independence (LCS 2) Dec. 18 during a short ceremony in Mobile, Ala. Independence is the second littoral combat ship delivered to the Navy, and the first LCS of the General Dynamics variant. LCS is a new breed of U.S. Navy warship with versatile warfighting capabilities, capable of open-ocean operation, but optimized for littoral, or coastal, missions. "Today marks a critical milestone in the life of the LCS 2," said Rear Adm. James Murdoch, the LCS program manager in the Navy's Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships. Prior to delivery, the Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) conducted Acceptance Trials aboard LCS 2 on Nov.

Seaspan Corporation (NYSE:SSW) announced the delivery of its 44th and 45th vessels, the Guayaquil Bridge and the COSCO Japan. The Guayaquil Bridge, a 2500 TEU vessel delivered on March 5, 2010, was built by Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. It is on charter to Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. (K-Line) of Japan under a ten-year, fixed-rate time charter. The Guayaquil Bridge is the first of seven Seaspan vessels to be chartered to K-Line. The 8500 TEU COSCO Japan, which was constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., was also delivered on March 5, 2010. The COSCO Japan is on charter to COSCO Container Lines Co., Ltd. (COSCON) of China under a twelve-year, fixed-rate time charter. It is the third of eighteen vessels to be chartered by Seaspan to COSCON.
