Space may be the final frontier but in this instance, the craft setting out on a momentous voyage was not the starship Enterprise but Rickmers New Orleans, one of nine identical ships maintaining Rickmers-Linie’s bi-weekly Round-the-World Pearl String service for heavylift and project cargo. On board was the Experiment Logistics Module - Pressurized Section (ELM-PS), which forms part of the Japanese Experiment Module Kibo (meaning ‘hope’), part of the Japanese contribution to the International Space Station (ISS). Rickmers New Orleans loaded the ELM-PS in Yokohama on February 7 and discharged it in Port Canaveral, close to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Rarely can a loading operation have been more closely scrutinized with executives from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and NASA joined by Bertram R C Rickmers, Chairman of the Rickmers Group, and Jan B Steffens, Managing Director of Rickmers-Linie. Kibo is Japan's first human space facility and its primary contribution to the ISS. It will enhance the unique research capabilities of the orbiting complex by providing an additional environment in which astronauts can conduct scientific experiments. The ELM-PS as carried by Rickmers New Orleans, will serve as a storage area for materials, tools and supplies. It can hold up to eight experiment racks and being pressurized, astronauts will be able to work within in shirt-sleeve conditions.

On the evening of June 7th, A&P Falmouth welcomed the Irish Ferries passenger vessel Isle of Innisfree to its dry docks for repairs. This vessel represents the fourth Irish Ferries vessel to dock with A&P Group during 2002, following the dry docking of the Ulysses and Isle of Inishmore in Southampton and the Normandy at Falmouth. The P&O Stena Line passenger/car ferry P&OSL Dover has dry docked in A&P Falmouth after arriving on 15th April 2002. This will be the final vessel from the P&O Stena Line fleet to undergo refit this season. The P&OSL Dover has dry docked in Falmouth every year since 1990 (when she first came in as Pride of Dover). The vessel will undergo various repairs whilst in dock similar to the repairs which were recently undertaken on her sister ship the P&OSL Calais, including tail shaft and tank surveys
At quarter past seven on the evening of Nov. 3, Falmouth Coastguard received an Inmarsat Standard C Distress alert from a Ukrainan registered cargo vessel called the Katya Zelenko. The Katya Zelenko was in a position 241 miles off the coast of Kenya. Falmouth Coastguard communicated with the vessel using their satellite communications and was able to ascertain that they had a sick crewman on board who needed immediate medical attention.
A&P Falmouth's modified dry-dock No. 4 accommodates a Bernhard Schulte-owned product tanker for survey. Bernhard Schulte’s product tanker Bomar Senda (formerly Ditte Theresa) entered the newly modified drydock (which has a pit excavated to facilitate thruster and sonar removals) for its first special survey. A&P Falmouth’s No 4 dock is of length 172.50m, breadth at entrance 26.21m, with a newly-excavated pit 8.5m long x 6m wide x 2m deep, offset 1m to the east.

The St. Vincent and Grenadines-flagged bulker Pooja, was refloated on October 30 at Carrick roads by a tug and then towed to Falmouth, England, Reuters reported. No pollution was reported. The 33,111 dwt bulker ran into trouble after it started to drag its anchor in bad weather. It did manage to raise its anchor but subsequently ran aground on Monday in the entrance to Carrick roads.
