Tanker Detained In U.K.

An Italian classed oil tanker has reportedly been detained at the U.K. port of Felixstowe after an inspection found a number of defects, the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency said. The Panamanian-flagged 1972-built Alboran 1, a 3,764 gross ton tanker, was inspected after RINA, said it had withdrawn class and statutory certificates from the vessel, the Coastguard said. The U.K. inspectors confirmed RINA's decision to withdraw certificates due to numerous defects to equipment and machinery. The inspector said he had no choice but to detain the vessel which the Coastguard said was operated by Greece's Golden Carriers Shipping SA.

U.K. Coastguard Responds to Tug Fire

Yarmouth Coastguard received a radio call from the tug HT Blade, stating they had an engine fire with three crew on board. The Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG) was activated and Coastguard Rescue teams from Lowestoft, Cromer and Felixstowe were tasked as well as requesting the launch of the Cromer lifeboat to the scene. A Rescue helicopter from RAF Wattisham is transporting the MIRG crew and a cargo vessel 'RMS Riga' is offering assistance in the area.

EU NAVFOR, Seychelles CG Prevent Piracy

On October 10 two French fishing vessels in position approximately 160 nm North of Seychelles reported being under attack by pirate skiffs. The attacks were unsuccessful. EU NAVFOR reacted immediately and launched the Luxembourg Maritime Patrol Aircraft stationed at the Seychelles to investigate the area of the incident. The EU NAVFOR Force Headquarters onboard EU NAVFOR Netherlands warship EVERTSEN contacted the Seychelles Coastguard, who had a patrol vessel operating 50nm from the incident

Ship Towed After Engine Room Fire

On January 11, 2004, Falmouth Coastguard received a call from the master of the general cargo vessel SEA FOX, reporting that they had had a fire in the engine room and were disabled and drifting in the Lands End Traffic Separation Zone. CG Rescues Yacht Harassed by Whales

Brixham Coastguard recently received an emergency 999 call on a mobile phone from a lone yachtsman who had suffered engine failure, and was being harassed by a pod of whales. The yachtsman called Brixham Coastguard via his mobile telephone after suffering an engine and total power failure and being unsure of his position. His situation was further exacerbated by the fact his vessel was being harassed by a pod of whales.

UK Tugboat in Trouble: Crew Taken Off

Eight crew members have been taken off a flooding tug boat a mile off Hope’s Nose, Torbay, on the south-west coast of England. The UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency reports that the tugboat began taking water after it collided with the vessel on tow. Nearby Brixham Coastguard has been coordinating the rescue operation after the collision in the dark on Sunday evening. MCA Reports Fatal Accident

On August 22, the Falmouth Coastguard received a call on channel 16 from a United Kingdom registered cable ship, Wave Sentinel, requesting medical assistance for a member of the crew in the engine room. The ship was approximately 12 miles off Lands End, Cornwall in the traffic separation scheme. Falmouth Coastguard scrambled a rescue helicopter to the scene with a doctor on board. MCA Reports Vessel Aground

On Monday, Humber Coastguard were advised by Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Humber that the German registered 2,551 ton general cargo vessel ‘Urte’, with a cargo of scrap metal had gone aground at the entrance to the River Trent. Oil Tankers Collide Off England's Isle of Wight

Bloomberg has reported that two oil tankers collided off England's Isle of Wight, the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency said. None of the crewmen on the vessels was injured in today's collision and there were no immediate signs of any leakage of fuel into the English Channel, agency spokesman Mark Clark told the British Broadcasting Corp. in an interview aired live.
