Crowley welcomed the newest 400-ft by 105-ft, heavy-lift deck barge to its fleet August 29 at a christening celebration at the Gunderson Marine shipyard in Portland, Ore. Micki Harrison, Crowley's regional human resources manager, did the honors, smashing a bottle of champagne on the side shell of the barge 455 7 and sending it hurtling into the Willamette River. The barge is the fourth heavy-lift deck barge christened by Crowley this year and the seventh in a series of heavy-lift deck barges slated to be built and put into service by 2013. Crowley's heavy-lift 455 series deck barges with 25-ft side shells provide both the capacity and deck strength needed to accommodate larger drilling and production units used for deepwater offshore energy exploration and development. They provide increased deck strength for loads up to 4,200 pounds per square foot.
The Maritime Administration (MarAd) has approved a vessel sale and transfer under section 9 of the Shipping Act, of 1916, as amended. MarAd has given approval to Dewey Seymore & Associates, of Folsom, California, to sale the deck barge EM1005, to China Harbour - Costain Mexico S. de. R.L .de. C.V., Mexico and transfer of said Vessel to Mexican registry and flag. The deck barge was built by Bollinger Marine Fabricators and has a gross tonnage of 1072.
On July 10, a member of the American Salvage Association (ASA) was contracted, following an emergency call, to lift the Bayou Boeuf Railroad Bridge in Amelia, Louisiana, which had been struck by a tug and barge resulting in significant damage to the bridge span. Upon arrival at the site, the ASA member lifted the damaged 200-ton bridge span and placed it onto a deck barge. The bridge span was then transferred to a local repair facility where the member company again lifted the bridge span
