GE Marine Engines’ LM Gas Turbines Exceed 600,000 Hours

GE Marine Engines announced that 36 GE LM aeroderivative gas turbines have accumulated more than 600,000 hours operating aboard 16 fast ferries. Fast ferry operators have selected our gas turbines for a variety of propulsion system configurations. This milestone further demonstrates the outstanding reliability and availability of the LM gas turbines for fast ferry applications,” said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Marine Engines. The Stena Explorer, a Highspeed Sea Service (HSS) catamaran, is the fast ferry that has operated the longest using GE gas turbines. The ship, which began operation in June 1996, is still in service today. The four GE gas turbines aboard sister HSS ship, Stena Voyager, have logged more than 160,000 hours in service, accumulating the highest number of operating hours for GE gas turbines used on a fast ferry. GE remains a leading supplier of gas turbine-based propulsion systems for fast ferries. What follows is a brief overview of the company’s fast ferry experience. The first gas turbine-powered fast ferry in Greece entered service in the summer of 2001. The Corsaire 14000-class monohull is powered by two GE LM2500+ gas turbines in a COmbined Diesel and Gas (CODAG) turbine arrangement with two diesel engines. The ship was built for operator Maritime Company of Levos (NEL), Piraeus, Greece, by Alstom Leroux Naval Shipyard in France.

GE Gas Turbines to Power Spanish Navy Frigate

GE Marine will supply Navantia, A Coruña, Spain, with two LM2500 gas turbines that will power the Spanish Navy’s next-generation F105 frigate, to be named Roger de Lauria. Navantia is building the frigate at its Ferrol shipyard. The LM2500 gas turbines will be applied in a COmbined Diesel Or Gas turbine (CODOG) configuration, with two diesel engines onboard the Roger de Lauria frigate. The 479-ft. Roger de Lauria will have a maximum speed of 28.5 knots


First LM2500-Powered Ship for Indian Navy

GE Marine reports that the Indian Navy commissioned the INS Shivalik stealth frigate on April 29, 2010, at the Indian Navy’s shipyard in Mumbai. This first-in-class frigate, built by Mazagon Dock Ltd. (MDL), is powered by two GE LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines with two diesels in a combined diesel or gas turbine (CODOG) configuration. This project marks the first LM2500-powered ship to enter service with the Indian Navy.

GE Targets LCS Business

GE Marine reports that the first LM2500+G4 aeroderivative marine gas turbine module has been delivered by Avio to DCNS’ shipyard in . The engine will be the basis for the COmbined Diesel eLectric And Gas turbine (CODLAG) propulsion system that will power the French Navy’s first European Multi-Mission Frigates (FREMM) ship. GE Provides LM2500 Gas Turbine Modules for U.S. Navy

GE Marine reports that its LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines will be used to power the United States Navy’s new Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. Rolls-Royce Strikes Deal to Power 10 U.S. Navy LCS

Rolls-Royce announced the contract to supply gas turbines and waterjets for 10 of the U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) – the Group’s largest ever marine naval surface ship contract. Designed to operate in combat zones close to the shore (littoral waters), each LCS will be equipped with two Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines powering four large waterjets, enabling the vessels to reach speeds in excess of 40 knots
