USACE Mobile District Adds New Survey Vessel

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District and Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Development Authority held a ceremony to officially welcome a new survey vessel to its fleet in Columbus, Miss., April 28, 2023.The Miss Agnes, built by Theodore, Ala. based Silver Ships, is a custom 26-foot multibeam and single beam capable marine survey vessel that features an enclosed center console, a three-monitor survey station, and an air conditioner unit that is paired with a generator.

Corvus Energy this week celebrated the grand opening of its new battery factory in Bellingham, Wash., amid growing demand for energy storage systems in the U.S. marine industry.Located in Fairhaven at the Port of Bellingham, the new battery plant produced its first Orca battery module in November 2022 and has already delivered several orders.“We have seen a significant uptake in opportunities for maritime batteries from the U.S. market,” said Geir Bjørkeli, CEO of Corvus Energy.

Torqeedo Opens New HQ and Production Facilities

Marine electric drives manufacturer Torqeedo GmbH celebrated the grand opening of a brand-new 8,300 m2 building near Munich where all company activities, including research, development, and production, will now take place.Fabian Bez, Torqeedo's chief executive officer, said, Whether by road, rail, air or water, sustainable forms of propulsion are needed to achieve the climate targets. In the transport sector, in particular, there is still a lot to be done. As Torqeedo, we recognized this trend early on and developed battery-electric drives for watercraft.

Everett Ship Repair Names New Drydock

On Wednesday, May 4, 2022, Everett Ship Repair, LLC (ESR) hosted a naming ceremony and grand opening for their newest drydock, the Emerald Lifter. The Emerald Lifter, formally the Zidell 220, was relocated to ESR’s facility at the Port of Everett last month. ESR performed maintenance and preservation before it was put into operation on May 3, with it’s first drydocking.The Emerald Lifter has a lifting capacity of 2,000 tons and a working deck of 220’ x 62’. Port Canaveral Launches RO/RO Division

The official grand opening of the Port Canaveral vehicle processing facility was marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the arrival of 730 new vehicles aboard the 653-foot-long vessel Wisteria Ace, the first vehicle carrier to call at the Port’s facility. Veecraft Marine, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Paramount Maritime Holdings and African-based global aerospace and technology company Paramount Group,  opened its new premises at a ceremony held in Cape Town. Veecraft Marine has manufactured more than 60  maritime platform solutions in various classes since its inception in 2002, totaling more than $130 million of contracts. Canada Makes First Propane Shipment

EDP Renewables Opens Wind Farm in Spain

Portuguese renewables company EDP Renewables (EDPR) has inaugurated the Muxía Wind Farm in the homonymous municipality, in the Autonomous Spanish Region of Galicia.A press release from the wind energy producer said that its CEO Jõao Manso Neto and the Managing Director of EDPR Spain were joined at the grand opening by Galician Regional Premier Alberto Núñez Feijóo and the Mayor of Muxía Félix Porto, as well as representatives from the local and regional authorities.The Muxía facility is equipped with thirty-four 2 MW wind turbines, offering a total installed capacity of 68 MW.Including this new wind farm, EDP Renewables now has a total installed capacity in the region of 281 MW…

Metal Shark Delivers Potomac Riverboat Passenger Vessels

The first two passenger vessels built by Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark for Entertainment Cruises’ Potomac Riverboat Company division have been delivered to Washington, D.C. and are now in service. The  two 88’, 149-passenger high speed aluminum catamaran vessels “Potomac Taxi I” and “Potomac Taxi II” departed Metal Shark’s Franklin, Louisiana shipyard in mid-September, traveled the Gulf of Mexico coastline and crossed Florida via Lake Okeechobee before proceeding northward up the Atlantic coast to Washington, D.C. Powered by twin Scania DI13 081M engines delivering 500 HP at 1800 RPM, the USCG Subchapter T vessels were designed by BMT Designers and Planners and BMT Nigel Gee, and feature an environmentally friendly low wake / low wash hull design.

Carnival Corp Reports Strongest Earnings

Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK) announced U.S. GAAP net income of $1.4 billion, or $1.93 diluted EPS, for the third quarter of 2016 compared to U.S. GAAP net income for the third quarter of 2015 of $1.2 billion, or $1.56 diluted EPS. Third quarter 2016 adjusted net income of $1.4 billion, or $1.92 adjusted EPS, was higher than adjusted net income of $1.4 billion, or $1.75 adjusted EPS, for the third quarter of 2015. Adjusted net income excludes unrealized gains and losses on fuel derivatives and other net charges, totaling $7 million in gains for the third quarter 2016 and $149 million of losses for the third quarter 2015. Revenues for the third quarter of 2016 were $5.1 billion, $0.2 billion higher than the $4.9 billion in the prior year.

Port Everglades, Panama Canal Renew Partnership

Port Everglades and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) have renewed their long-standing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote trade opportunities for another five years. This renewal will extend their strategic alliance to 2021. The MOU solidifies both entities' dedication to growth and best customer practices. The ACP and Port Everglades first signed an MOU in August 2009. Areas of cooperation between the ACP and Port Everglades include joint advertising programs, data interchange, and competitive market analyses of the shipping industry. This alliance will also continue to promote the route to the West Coast of South America as well as the  "All-Water Route," the route from Asia to the U.S. East Coast via the Panama Canal.

Carnival Corporation & plc today announced the official opening of its Arison Maritime Center, a world-class facility dedicated to providing safety training for its bridge and engineering officers responsible for the navigation and operation of the company’s fleet of cruise ships. Located in Almere, Netherlands just outside Amsterdam, the new 75-million-euro facility features some of industry’s most advanced simulators and training equipment to provide annual training to more than 6,500 bridge and engineering officers from Carnival’s 10 global cruise line brands.

San Jacinto Maritime Technology and Training Center Now Open

The San Jacinto College Maritime Technology and Training Center on the Maritime Campus is now open for maritime training along the Port of Houston. Located at 3700 Old State Highway 146 in La Porte, Texas, the 45,000-square-foot Maritime Technology and Training Center sits 14 feet above ground and is home to more than 40 maritime courses. The ground level of the Maritime Technology and Training Center showcases a training dock with lifeboats, davits, and fast rescue craft, and coming soon, a separate industry dock for crew changes.

Carnival's Earnings Up 40%

Carnival Corporation reported a 40 percent increase in its results for the full fiscal year ended November 30. Strong operational execution delivered $0.25 per share higher earnings than the mid-point of the company’s full year 2015 December guidance, despite a $0.10 drag from the net impact of currency and fuel prices. Carnival Corporation & plc announced adjusted net income for the full year 2015 of $2.1 billion, or $2.70 diluted EPS, compared to $1.5 billion, or $1.93 diluted EPS, for the prior year. Full year 2015 U.S. GAAP net income was $1.8 billion, or $2.26 diluted EPS, which included unrealized losses (non-cash) on fuel derivatives of $332 million and other net charges of $17 million. As GE celebrates the grand opening of its Mebane Customer Experience Center and a multimillion dollar manufacturing facility renovation, Maritime Reporter & Engineering News gets an advance look at a new product line that could save marine and oil and gas customers millions of dollars in lost time and equipment damage. GE Industrial Solutions CEO Bob Gilligan told GE employees, distributors, and state and local politicians that ultimately, the firm’s energy management business would more than double to $13 billion annually as GE moves to recapture the lead in that market space. Gilligan also predicts that once this sea change has been completed, GE will then be earning as much as 90 percent of its revenues from the industrial side of the ledger.

Inauguration of Jimmie H. Hobaugh Community Center

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today the completion of the Captain Jimmie H. Hobaugh Coast Guard Community Center. The Foundation will host a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening celebration on Monday, July 27 at 1:00 p.m. in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Anne Brengle, Coast Guard Foundation president; RDML June Ryan, commander for Coast Guard District 9 (Cleveland); and CAPT Stephen Teschendorf, captain of the port will share remarks. Shipwreck Refloated Near the Galapagos

Grounded cargo ship Floreana was refloated by T&T Salvage on April 4, 2015 in San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. Leading operations in the Galapagos Islands World Heritage Site, T&T Salvage ensured all fuel, oil and other pollutants were successfully removed prior to refloating the ship wreck that lie sunk on a rocky volcanic shoreline for over two months. The salvage team’s efforts were credited with protecting the historic and environmentally sensitive island where the HMS Beagle first landed in 1835 with naturalist Charles Darwin.

Liebherr Opens African Maritime Hub

Liebherr Maritime Cranes celebrated the grand opening of the new sales and service center in Durban, South Africa. The new African maritime hub was opened by a number of guests from the local industry and Liebherr representatives. Mainly as a result of the close cooperation with Transnet over the past few years, Liebherr-Africa (LAF) has decided to extend its activities and to establish a specialized maritime hub in Durban. Transnet operates more than 60 Liebherr cranes, 13 mobile harbor cranes, 31 ship to shore container cranes and 18 rubber tyre gantry cranes.
