GE Marine reports that the United States Navy’s future USS America (LHA 6) amphibious assault ship recently completed successful acceptance sea trials powered by two GE LM2500+ marine gas turbines. Acceptance sea trials were conducted in the Gulf of Mexico by Huntington Ingalls Industries, nearby its Pascagoula, Mississippi, shipyard. “The selection of the LM2500+ gas turbines offers propulsion commonality for this first-in-class ship with the U.S. Navy’s USS Makin Island LHD 8 amphibious assault ship. The LHD 8 was the first U.S. Navy ship to use this hybrid propulsion system configuration, as well as the first military application of the LM2500+ gas turbine,” said Brien Bolsinger, Vice President, Marine Operations, GE Marine, Evendale, Ohio. The LHA 6 ship's hybrid mechanical-electric propulsion system consists of two LM2500+ gas turbines and two, 5,000 horsepower auxiliary propulsion motors, allowing the ship to reach speeds in excess of 20 knots. The hybrid propulsion system enables the ship's propellers to be driven either by the gas turbines or by the electric motors, which are powered from the ship service electrical system. The hybrid propulsion system allows the ship to operate in a more fuel efficient mode throughout its speed range, America-class ships are 844 feet long,106 feet wide and displace 44,971 long tons, and can accommodate a crew of 1,204 (102 officers) and 1,687 troops

AKA, a Canadian system integrator and marine engineering company partnered with Foss, which owns and operates one of the largest tug and barge fleets on the U.S. West Coast, in developing this technology. The hybrid propulsion and energy management system has been proven to significantly reduce
Hybrid Propulsion System Configuration GE Marine announces that its LM2500+ marine aeroderivative gas turbines have been selected by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB), , to power the U.S. Navy’s new LHA 6 amphibious assault ship. The LHA 6 ship’s hybrid mechanical-electric propulsion system will consist of two LM2500+ gas turbines, each rated at 35,290 shaft horsepower at U.S. Navy standard day conditions (100oF), and two, 5,000 horsepower auxiliary propulsion motors
Maritime transport in the Baltic Sea to become greener with EU support The EU's TEN-T Program will provide more than €2 million to back the upgrade of two ferries navigating in the Baltic Sea to the mixed use of electricity and fuel. The new hybrid propulsion system will help to reduce the environmental impact of ships, as well as secure the operability and stability of the vessels. The new EU regulation requires all vessels travelling in European waters to cut down the emission of
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) has concluded time-charters for two new LNG carriers with Diamond Gas International, a Singapore affiliate of Mitsubishi Corporation.
