FMC's Doyle: LNG Bunkering Needs to Move Forward

FMC Commissioner William P. Doyle delivered the keynote address to LNG Bunkering North America conference Vancouver, Canada, providing insight into LNG as a marine fuel and LNG bunkering. "Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering in North America is moving forward. Quite frankly it needs to move forward,” Doyle said. “There is an abundant supply of natural gas in North America. Utilizing natural gas as a marine fuel would help ship owners and operators comply with the MARPOL Annex VI requirements to reduce air pollution from ocean going vessels." Doyle touched upon hot topics such as MARPOL Annex VI and its feasibility, natural gas’ environmental benefits, the cost and economics of LNG as a marine fuel, international container fleet and natural gas as a fuel, LNG bunkering for North America, LNG exports and synergies with LNG bunkering, inland waterways LNG fuel and bunkering, the ramp-up of LNG bunkering overseas, and bunkering coordination in North America. International classification society Bureau Veritas has published a comprehensive set of guidelines on LNG Bunkering, with the aim of speeding adoption of LNG as a ship’s fuel by kick-starting the LNG bunker chain. ABS Approves GTTNA’s LNG Bunker Barge Design

Houston-based GTT North America (GTTNA), U.S. subsidiary of French engineering and technology company Gaztransport & Technigaz SA (GTT), has received approval in principle (AIP) from ABS for the design of a 2,200 cubic meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge. The distinctive design incorporates GTT’s proven membrane Cargo Containment System (CCS), which is utilized in 70% of the global LNG carrier fleet and nearly 90% of LNG carrier projects on order.


Pavilion Energy, ExxonMobil Join on Singapore LNG Bunkering

 Pavilion Energy Pte Ltd (Pavilion) and Exxon Mobil Corp. (ExxonMobil) will work together to develop liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering in Singapore, as well as other downstream projects, reports the Straits Times.   Both companies will also look at developing other downstream projects here, said Pavilion Energy chief executive Seah Moon Ming. The downstream sector typically refers to the processing and selling, or distribution of gas.  


Port of Antwerp Gets Practical About LNG Bunkering

Recommendations for Safe, Efficient LNG Bunkering

One of the key hurdles to the increased global use of ships fuelled by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is the lack of harmonization of bunkering operations. “DNV GL is therefore today launching a Recommended Practice for authorities, LNG bunker suppliers and ship operators which provides guidance on how LNG bunkering can be undertaken in a safe and efficient manner,” said Lars Petter Blikom, DNV GL’s LNG director.
