Yara Plans World’s First Ammonia-Powered Container Ship

Yara Clean Ammonia, North Sea Container Line, and Yara International have joined forces to realize the world's first container ship that will use clean ammonia as fuel. Named Yara Eyde, the vessel will be the first to sail emission-free sea route between Norway and Germany.Yara Eyde will operate between Oslo, Porsgrunn, Hamburg and Bremerhaven, so that from 2026, Norwegian companies can trade their products emissions-free in and out of Norway. Yara International is participating as cargo-owner.

World's First Ammonia-powered Containership Planned

A new containership planned for operations in Europe is set to become the world's first to use pure ammonia as fuel.Yara Clean Ammonia and NorthSea Container Line are establishing a joint venture, NCL Oslofjord, to operate the ammonia-powered ship Yara Eyde on routes between Norway and Germany from 2026.The project has been awarded just over NOK 40 million (US$3.6 million) from Enova, a Norwegian government enterprise promoting clean energy technologies.Ammonia is one of several alternative fuels gaining traction in commercial shipping to help cut emissions.

Wärtsilä to Supply Scrubbers to NCL

European technology giant Wärtsilä will be supplying hybrid scrubber system packages for Norwegian Cruise Line's (NCL) Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway.According to a press note from Wärtsilä, the scrubber systems have been ‘specially customized to meet the specific needs’ of the two cruise ships – which included adapting ‘to meet the ships’ restricted space availability’.The scrubber systems will enable the 325 meters long cruise vessels to be in compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) sulfur restriction legislation while operating on heavy fuel oil (HFO). The legislation became effective in January 2020.

Meyer Werft to Float Out of Norwegian Encore Soon

Norwegian shipbuilder Meyer Werft announced that Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)'s newest cruise ship Norwegian Encore will most likely be leaving the covered building dock II on 17 August 2019.The ship has a rating of 169,145 GRT and measures 333.46 m in length and 41.4 m in width, with capacity for 4,004 passengers.The ship built for the American cruise shipping company NCL will start to leave the dock at around 8 a.m, it said. MJM Bags Largest-Ever Cruise Contract
