As a rudderless U.S. Navy debates maritime strategy, fleet futures and platform performance, Americaā€™s naval shipbuilding industry can look forward to another year of relative stasis.Barring a major geopolitical incident or unexpected maritime provocation, government shipbuilding isnā€™t going to change course. With Admiral Michael Gilday approaching the final ā€œlame duckā€ year of his four-year term as Chief of Naval Operations and the 2024 election season looming, the prospect for major changes in the Navyā€™s demand signal seems limited.Aside from the U.S.

Updates, Developments and Advances in Combat and Patrol Craft

SBI completed an order last December for 52 Coastal Interceptor Vessels for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. (Photo: SAFE Boats)

My first visit in 2007 to the American Society of Naval Engineersā€™ (ASNE) Multi-Agency Craft Conference (MACC) was an eye-opener. Having built a naval architecture career with frigates, destroyers and other large naval and commercial ships, I was eager to learn of the smaller craft used by the U.S. Navy and other government and military bodies. As my flight into Norfolk, Va. descended over Chesapeake Bay, I gazed in amazement as a Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) raced toward Virginia Beach, slowed, glided up the beach and into its shore base.

How to Choose Propulsion Systems for Patrol Craft

The propulsion system is a critical part of all patrol craft. There are different types of propulsion systems available for use on these craft, and selecting the ā€œbestā€ one for the application at hand is not to be taken lightly. You will note that I used ā€œbestā€ in quotes, which Iā€™ve done to hint at the subjective nature of the decision. Propellers, waterjets, sterndrives, outboards ā€“ they are all commercial off the shelf technologies which are mature and used in different patrol craft applications.

The Case for Stock Boats

Could you imagine designing your own car or truck or airplane, and then trying to build it? Unless youā€™re Elon Musk, you most likely couldnā€™t.Todayā€™s consumers donā€™t want to solve their own problems, they want turnkey solutions, and they want them now. In what industryā€”other than maritimeā€”do you see customers designing their own products, putting them out for bid, and then dealing with time and cost overruns? Yet, in the maritime world most acquisitions are long, drawn-out processesā€¦
