Karachi, Pakistan, Power Ships Idle Worsen Outages

Two Turkish floating electricity power station ships lie idle off Karachi since late 2010 despite Karachi power shortage The world’s largest power ship lies anchored off Pakistan’s energy-starved port city of Karachi, just one of its 19 chimneys puffing smoke into the sea air, reports Haris Amwar in  Blooberg Business Week news item. The Kaya Bey and a sister vessel, whose furnace-oil generators could halve the city’s peak 600-megawatt energy shortfall, has been largely idle since the Supreme Court suspended its license amid an anti-corruption probe. Karachi’s 18 million people face another summer without the power they need to cool homes or run businesses. The Turkish floating power station dropped anchor in November 2010 as part of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s bid to curb a nationwide power deficit that widened to 6,000 megawatts this month, or 30 percent of demand. Energy shortages, which the government says may slice 4 percentage points off economic growth in the year to June, have stirred public discontent against Gilani. Street protests and factory shutdowns are proliferating less than a year before the next general election.


Rolls-Royce Wins Italian Shipyard Order

Rolls-Royce wins new order from Italian shipyard for integrated power, propulsion & equipment systems for anchor handling vessel Rolls-Royce has signed an £18 million contract with Italian shipyard Rosetti Marino S.p.A for the design and delivery of an integrated power & propulsion and equipment system for an anchor handling vessel. The vessel will be built for Augusta Offshore S.p.A and is a repeat order of a Rolls-Royce UT 712 CD due to be delivered in June from the same yard


Delivery: Damen Celtic Presence Felt With Research Vessel

Damen Shipyards Gorinchem has completed the research vessel Celtic Explorer for the Irish Marine Institute of Dublin. This outstanding 215-ft. (65-m) ship was constructed by Damen in partnership with the Vlissingen yard of Royal Schelde and follows two other important vessels previously delivered to Ireland, the research vessel "Celtic Voyager" and the buoy maintenance ship "Granuaille". The work to be carried out by this new vessel will include a National Seabed Survey in Irish waters


Sophisticated Celtic Explorer Delivered by Damen

From China to Italy

South China Shipyard (SCS) in is putting the final touches on a sturdy new anchor-handling tug for delivery to Italian buyers. The 42 by 11-meter vessel is powered by a pair of 60 liter V-16 Cummins QSK60 main engines. Each engine delivers 2200 hpat 1800 RPM into Reintjes WAF763 gears with 5.75:1 ratios and four-blade fixed-pitch propellers in nozzles. Electrical needs are met by a pair of Cummins QSM11 powered 240 Kw generators with a harbor set that is a Cummins-powered 60 KW generator.

This past September the South China Shipyard located at Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province, China delivered another in their successful series of 4400 hp, 137.8-ft by 36-ft-meter anchor handling tugs. The Kitty Fox II is classed BV 1 +HULL +Mach Special Service Multi-purpose AHT unrestricted navigation; the vessel is one of a continuing series. It is powered by a pair of 2200 hp Cummins QSK60-M main engines and is fitted with an anchor handling and towing winch set


Bharati Shipyard Wins Contract

Bharati Shipyard Ltd has secured a contract from Bourbon Supply Investissements, France for export of five 120 tons bollard pull anchor handling tug cum supply vessels. The product range which initially was limited to simple inland cargo barges, deep-sea trawlers and dredgers has been upgraded to building maneuverable and power-packed ocean going tractor tugs, cargo ships, tankers and other support vessels required for the offshore industry. New Anchors Outfitted on Alaskan Tankers

Tank ships operated by the Alaska Tanker Company (ATC), ALASKAN NAVIGATOR and the ALASKAN FRONTIER were outfitted with new anchors and are back in service. Two other tank ships, the ALASKAN LEGAND and ALASKAN EXPLORER each had a new temporary anchor installed and are operating under restrictions outlined by the Coast Guard. The decision to replace all the anchors on these vessels were made by ATC after it was discovered the original anchors were showing signs of metal failure


Sibu’s Sapor to Deliver Anchor Handler

With a track record in delivery of smaller tugs, Sapor Shipyard of Sibu in Sarawak East Malaysia, is demonstrating an ability to build larger anchor handling tugs to meet the demands of the Malaysian petroleum industry. Work crews were putting the finishing touches on 121-ft. vessel in early August 2007. With a 34-ft. beam and a molded depth of 16-ft. this is an example of the current crop of smaller AHTs. For its size the Omni Akira has some capabilities centered on the double-drum


MacGREGOR Plimsoll Wins $7.27M Order

MacGREGOR’s Offshore division has won another order for packages of MacGREGOR Plimsoll deck machinery for a series of 120-tonne bollard-pull offshore anchor-handlers ordered by a Japanese owner At the end of October, Niigata Shipbuilding & Repair Inc. in Japan ordered five shipsets of deck machinery to be installed on 70m-long offshore anchor-handling tug/supply (AHTS) vessels being built for a Japanese owner. Three shipsets of equipment will be delivered in 2008
