Kongsberg Launches DPS for Workboat Market

Last month Kongsberg Marine launched the Compact DP Series from Kongsberg Maritime. A solution for the smaller vessel and operator, it offers a complete DP class 1 solution for dynamically positioned vessels and is designed to meet the requirements of Offshore Service Vessels and workboats. The system consists of two main components, the cPos and cJoy, both of which use Kongsberg RCU technology, within the (cPos or cJoy) Compact Controller. This forms the heart of the system and is scalable to fit any DP class 1 system. The controller's main function is to implement DP and joystick control algorithms, take actions as to operator commands and the information collected and processing from the various sensors in the DP system. These actions are converted by the Compact Controller to the signals that operate a vessel's propulsion and thruster systems. The cPos is designed to provide full Auto Position functionality with options for Auto Pilot control, Line Tracking mode and Follow Target. The system is designed to interface with DGPS, Fanbeam, gyros, MRU, anemometer and thrusters as standard though several interfaces are available as options including HiPAP hydroacoustics and diesel-electric power plants. The cJoy system adds wind-compensated joystick control with automatic heading control and optional simple station keeping to the Compact DP Series.

MMT Collects Sub-bottom Profiler Data

MMT (Sweden) completed a survey which includes collection of parametric sub-bottom profile (SBP) data with a Kongsberg TOPAS PS 40 system. The system was hullmounted on MMT´s survey vessel Triad. The survey covered an area of 6000 km2 in the Baltic Sea with an extensive amount of data. The SBP data was collected during a hydrographic survey for the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) where high resolution bathymetric data will be used to update sea charts

DMW Completes Crane Acceptance Trials

DMW Marine Group announced it has completed factory acceptance testing on four of its model M400.24A4 cranes with DNV OS E101 certification and type approval. The cranes are for installation on new drillships for a U.S. customer, DMW said, adding that 12 more cranes are to follow in the next year for the same customer.  

Panoro Energy Will Drill Three Wells in Brazil’s Offshore

RIO DE JANEIRO - Independent driller Panoro Energy (PEN.OS) expects to drill three wells in Brazil's offshore Santos Basin in coming months, the company's chief executive said Wednesday. During a presentation at the 18th Latin Oil Week, Panoro's Kjetil Solbraekke said three prospects will be targeted, with the first well drilled in June or July. (Dow Jones)

Enhancing Lifeboat Saftey

DNV is taking lifeboat safety one step further. The company claims that maritime lifeboat safety will be enhanced by transferring offshore lifeboat design practices to ships. The shortcomings of existing free fall lifeboat designs were revealed in a number of incidents related to structural safety, human loads and headway back in 2005. A joint industry project was initiated by OLF (the Norwegian Oil and Gas Association) to find the reasons for these incidents.

L-3 Maritime Systems Wins LCS Contract

L-3 Maritime Systems has been awarded a contract from General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems to supply its Seaframe Control System for the next Independence variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). The contract is for the first ship and includes options for an additional 14 ships.
