Feature: Business Milestone for Vietnam

Vietnam's fledgling shipbuilding industry has raised its international profile by entering into a seminal agreement with the UK's Graig Group for the construction of a series of double-hulled bulk carriers. Cardiff-based Graig's bold move, potentially entailing 15 vessels of the Diamond 53 handymax type, draws on its experience in assigning a similarly extensive program, for 14 examples of the 53,000-dwt design, to Chinese yards. For the industrially-ambitious Vietnamese, who have already made substantial investments in modern shipbuilding equipment and practises, the Graig deal has particular appeal not only for its promise of serial production of one of the most well-considered, future-oriented bulker designs, but also for the broader package which the firm brings to the project.

Passenger Vessels With Pedigrees

Italian prowess in the field of passenger vessel design, outfitting and technology is near legendary status in the international marine community. Even as the grip on these high-value, niche vessels loosens — largely due to cost-cutting competition from the Far East — a quick peak a the world orderbook and recent deliveries of cruise ships quickly tells who currently reigns supreme in the cruise shipping market. Evidence of Italian influence in the passenger vessel segment is undeniable, and over the years the country's shipbuilders have catered to some of the world's most discerning and quality demanding customers, such as U.S.-based Disney Cruise Line.

3-D Modeling for Small and Large Vessel Construction

Developments in shipbuilding have been driven by needs to simplify the engineering and manufacturing. The cause is not just to become more competitive but also to avoid problems in controlling engineering and manufacturing costs. Two recent examples carried out with ShipConstructor include a small 7.5-m aluminum police boat and a 120-m car/truck/pax mono-hull fast ferry. Both vessels have been 3-D modeled using the same ShipConstructor software, which can be scaled to be a price efficient solution for small and large vessels at the same time. The software maintains the same functionality. The reduced cost version is only limited in the maximum number of parts in the project.

Largest Aquastrada High Speed Ferry Under Construction at Rodriquez

Currently under construction at Rodriquez Cantieri Navali SpA's Pietra Ligure shipyard is a TMV 115 high-speed passenger and vehicle ferry for the Spanish ferry operator Balearia Eurolines Maritimes. The contract for this vessel was signed in January 2000 and delivery is expected in May 2001. Though very similar in size and capacity to the previous TMV 114 delivered to Spanish operator Armas Ocean Jet in April of this year, there are notable differences. The reasons for these differences between the two vessels are due to owner preferences, including the choice of hull material. The additional truck lane meters of the TMV 115 have been obtained by using hoistable central and outboard car decks to allow for these taller vehicles.

Rodriquez and RINA Develop Green High-Speed Ferry

Italian shipyard group Rodriquez Cantieri Navali and Genoa-based classification society RINA have jointly developed an innovative and environmentally friendly high-speed ferry. A full scale prototype of the Aliswath, presently under construction, will undertake sea trials in 2007. The Aliswath hybrid design combines the small wetted area of the SWATH concept with a hydrofoil system. The prototype is designed to carry 450 passengers and 60 cars at speeds up to 28 knots, while reducing fuel consumption by 40 per cent compared with existing designs and also reducing wash, emissions and risk of oil pollution. The key to the trimaran-like design is an immersed torpedo-shaped hull with secondary dynamic lift from a sophisticated wing foil system.

Rodriquez Cantiere Navali Wins Fast Ferry Contract

While much of the accolades for advanced fast ferry construction is heaped on Australian companies, Italy's Rodriquez Cantiere Navali has not so quietly built an enviable stable of business and references. Most recently the company emerged as the winning yard to build a new high speed ferry for Navigazione Libera del Golfo (NLG) in Naples, Italy. 50 (yard number 306) in May 2003 for service from Naples to Capri. Passengers will be accommodated on three decks with bar service on the main and upper decks. The as yet un-named vessel will be fully HSC compliant and will be classed by RINA. Investment in Design:The Rising Value of Propulsion Business

Despite a fall in the overall number of vessels forecast to be delivered from shipyards until 2007, the value of the propulsion systems installed in newbuilds is expected to show a rise from 2004, reaching nearly $5-billion by 2007 on the strength of increasing power requirements. A new business study entitled The World Marine Propulsion Report 2003-2007* predicts that newbuild deliveries measured by tonnage will grow by four-percent over the five years, against a fall in vessel numbers of 10-percent. However, the propulsive power embodied in the newbuild influx should increase by eight-percent compared with the 1997-2002 period. The market for main engines…

Rodriquez Is Ahead With TMV 84

Subsequent to extensive sea trials, the TMV 84 Ramon Llull was delivered to Spanish shipowner Balearia Eurolines Maritimes from Rodriquez Cantieri Navali’s Messina yard in Sicily – two weeks ahead of schedule. It is fitting that the vessel, which will operate on the Barcelona to Menorca route, is named after 13th Century philosopher Ramon Llull, who was born in Palma de Mallorca, made the short tip to the Ballearic Island where the vessel will operate. The sea trials, which encompassed more than three weeks, concluded on May 5, 2003, with positive results; the vessel, which can carry up to 330 tons dwt, surpassed speeds of 40 knots. Ramon Llull can hold up to 462 passengers in both tourist and first class, and holds a garage that is equipped with hydraulically hoistable ramps for 56 cars.

Rodriquez Cantieri Navali Launches Fast Ferry

“Ramon Llull” (yard number 311), an 84 meter all aluminium fast ferry being built for Balearia Eurolinies Maritimes, was launched today at Rodriquez’s yard in Pietra Ligure, Italy. “Ramon Llull”, named after the thirteenth century Spanish philosopher, has a capacity for 462 passengers divided into 106 for first class, located on the upper deck, and 356 for economy class, located on the main deck. The car deck continues with the innovative arrangement found on the larger Rodriquez TMV 115 in that the central ramps can be raised to accommodate tall vehicles such as buses or trucks. With the decks lowered, the maximum car capacity is 58 cars but with the decks raised, there are 110 lane meters available for these tall vehicles yet still additional space for 22 cars.
