The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA), the national association representing the U.S. shipbuilding, maintenance and repair industry, announced its yearly member safety awards for 2023.“Workforce health and safety is embedded into the fabric of our industry because the teams that work in our shipyards and throughout the industrial base are the most important asset we have in building and repairing the U.S. commercial and military fleets,” said Matthew Paxton, president of the Shipbuilders Council of America.

SCA honors shipbuilding and repair organizations with the “Excellence in Safety” Award and “Improvement in Safety” Award each year for enhancement of operations and promotion of safety and accident prevention.Over the past several years, the industry has seen the total recordable incident rate steadily decline, with the most significant decline seen in 2019.

Eighty-two Crowley Maritime Corporation vessels recently received the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA)’s annual Jones F. Devlin Awards in recognition of their outstanding safety records in 2017. Each year the CSA grants Devlin Award certificates to manned merchant vessels that have operated for two or more years without incurring a lost time injury (LTI), specifically highlighting the skills and dedication of the crewmembers responsible for safe vessel operations.Crowley’s 2017 Devlin Award-worthy vessels together have achieved an impressive total of 613 years of service without an LTI.

Eighty-seven vessels owned or managed by Crowley Maritime Corporation recently received the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA)’s annual Jones F. Devlin Awards in recognition of their 2016 safety records. Each year, the CSA grants Devlin Award certificates to manned merchant vessels that have operated for two or more years without incurring a Lost Time Injury (LTI), highlighting the skills and dedication of the crewmembers responsible for safe vessel operations. Crowley’s 2016 Devlin Award-worthy vessels together have achieved 670 years of service without an LTI.

The U.S. maritime industry publicly recognized the merchant mariners responsible for safe ship operations at the Annual Safety Awards Luncheon held on June 7, 2017. In all, 211 people, representing 53 companies and their subsidiaries attended the annual industry-sponsored event where 1,582 vessels with 10,604 cumulative years of accident free operation were recognized. Since 1958, the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) has also sponsored the Safety Achievement Award program which recognizes outstanding feats of safety that contribute to saving a life, a ship or other property.

Shipbuilders Council of America  names Richard McCreary as new chairman; honors Sen. Cochran and Rep. At its annual spring meeting in Washington, D.C. this week, the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA), the national trade association representing the U.S. shipyard industry, named Richard McCreary of BAE Systems as the new chairman of the association. Additionally, SCA honored Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) as recipients of its Maritime Leadership Award, recognizing the two for their demonstrated dedication and support of the U.S.

American Maritime Safety recognized Foss Maritime's efforts in building and maintaining a strong culture of safety by awarding the company the American Maritime Safety Award for the implementation and management of zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy. Foss will be presented with the award at the 2016 Annual Membership Meeting and Safety Awards Luncheon on Thursday, October 13. "Foss has a long history of leading the industry in safety and innovation, and we are honored by this recognition of our drug and alcohol policy," said Foss President John Parrott. "Our primary concern in all that we do is to keep our employees, equipment and the environments in which we operate safe.

The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) has recognized 73 vessels of Foss Maritime and their subsidiary companies with the 2015 Jones F. Devlin award for outstanding safety records. The Jones F. Devlin Award is one of two award programs CSA has sponsored since 1968. The award is given to self-propelled merchant vessels that have operated for two full years or more without a crew member involved in a lost-time incident. It publicly recognizes the skill and dedication of the men and women who are responsible for safe vessel operations. The 73 Foss vessels were recognized at the CSA Annual Safety Awards Luncheon held this year on June 8 in New Orleans. Altogether, the Foss and subsidiary company vessels achieved the equivalent of 562 years of incident-free operation.

Shell Shipping and Maritime, Americas recently held its third annual Goal Zero Hero Awards dinner in Houston, recognizing the crewmembers of 21 contracted/chartered vessels, who had the courage to intervene and clearly demonstrate their commitment to zero incidents and safe operations in service to Shell. Austal USA remains one of the safest shipyards in the country the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) announced Mar. Austal’s hard-earned workplace safety record has been recognized, yet again, by the SCA with both the 2015 Award for Excellence in Safety and the 2015 Award for Improvement in Safety –the company’s total recorded incident rate (TRIR) in 2015 was 44% lower than the rate in 2014 and 52% lower than the industry average. “Austal’s award-winning safety record is evidence of their steadfast commitment to the absolute safety of the company’s employees and SCA is proud to have them as a member shipyard.” SCA President Matthew Paxton said. Austal has won either the Award for Excellence in Safety or the Award for Improvement in Safety nine times since 2008.

The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) has announced a new partnership with the National Shipbuilding Research Program and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a part of the Department of Labor (DOL), focused on continuing employee safety practices in U.S. shipyards. The Alliance Program will develop training and best practices to promote safety and health in the shipbuilding and repair industry including preventing worker exposure to electrical, ergonomic, struck-by and slip, trip and fall hazards.

The National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) announced it is accepting nominations for the 2016 Safety in Seas Awards competition. The Safety in Seas Awards honor excellence in offshore safety culture and practices. "Even during tough times brought on by low commodity prices, safe offshore operations remain the primary goal of our members. The safety culture approach to conducting operations offshore is a core value industry-wide and is highly encouraged by regulators,” said NOIA President Randall Luthi. NOIA confers two distinct safety awards annually to recognize excellence among those who, by their actions, design or influence, have contributed to improving the safety of life offshore.

Crowley Maritime Corporation was recognized today with a 2015 AMS Safety Award by American Maritime Safety, Inc. (AMS) for the company’s implementation of a drug and alcohol awareness program for crewmembers that perform safety-sensitive functions on vessels calling U.S. ports. This program contains various non-industry standard items, above and beyond the requirements including: searches that prohibit all types of substances that may impair safety; specialized online refresher training; and development of an onboard collector’s guide to provide step-by-step instructions in the event a drug collection must be performed aboard one of Crowley’s owned or managed vessels. “Crowley evinces a determination to not just meet, but exceed U.S.

The American Equity Underwriters, Inc. (AEU) presented its 2014 Safety Awards at the annual American Longshore Mutual Association, Ltd. (ALMA) Conference on July 19, 2015, in Key Biscayne, Fla. AEU, which provides solutions for workers’ compensation coverage under the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, each year gives awards to the best performing ALMA members nationwide based on the rate and severity of accidents for the calendar year. The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) has recognized 75 Foss Maritime vessels with the 2014 Jones F. Devlin award for outstanding safety records. The award is given to self-propelled merchant vessels that have operated for two full years or more without a crewmember losing a full turn at watch because of an occupational injury. The Jones F. Devlin award publicly recognizes the skills and dedication of the hardworking men and women who are responsible for those safe vessel operations.

The National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) today presented SEACOR Marine with the 2015 NOIA Safety in Seas (SIS) Culture of Safety Award and Safety Practice Award. This is the first time the same company has won awards in the same year. NOIA added the Culture of Safety award to the competition in 2014. SEACOR Marine won the Culture of Safety Award for their safety culture model which spurred a seven year trend of declining total number of Lost Time Incidents, Medical Treatment Incidents, and Pollution Incidents reaching Goal Zero for 2014 – that’s a Total Recordable Incident Rate of zero. The Safety Practice Award was presented to SEACOR Marine for their behavior-based safety program PAUSE, which is short for Prevent Accidents Use Safety Equipment.
