U.S. Navy Awards Ingalls $620 Million Shipbuilding Contract

Ingalls has been awarded a $620 million contract to build two additional DDG 51 Class Aegis guided missile destroyers for the U.S. Navy. The two-ship contract awarded represents the exercise of an option included in a multi-year, multi-ship contract awarded to Ingalls last year. With the award, Ingalls has 21 Aegis destroyers under firm contract; and holds options for four additional ships which will be awarded over the next two years. Of the 25 ships and options awarded to Ingalls, 11 ships have been delivered. A 12th Ingalls-built destroyer will be delivered in January. The Navy plans a total of 57 ships in the DDG 51 program.


Vietnam Builder Wins Ship Contract

The Pha Rung Shipyard Company, under the Vietnam Ship Building Industry Corporation (Vinashin), on Oct. 9 signed a contract to build five ships for the Forturne Marine Company of the Republic of Korea (RoK), according to a report from the Vietnam News Agency. This contract is significant, as it is Vinashin's first contract to export ships to the RoK. The 110 x 8.2 m, 6,500-ton ships will each cost approximately $11 million.


Wärtsilä to Power Project Genesis

Wärtsilä Corporation received a contract from Aker Yards Oy, Finland, in July 2006 for the delivery of the main engines and the transverse tunnel thrusters for the 220,000 grt Project Genesis cruise ship contracted by Royal Caribbean Cruise Ltd (RCL) for operation by Royal Caribbean International. Due for delivery in autumn 2009, this cruise ship will be powered by six Wärtsilä 46 common rail diesel engines. The engines will be incorporated in the ship's diesel-electric power plant


Troubled Yard Ordered to Hand Over Ship

It has been reported that the shipbuilder Swan Hunter will be ordered to hand over its last remaining warship - which will then be completed at a rival yard in Scotland. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel, the Lyme Bay, will be handed over to BAE Systems at Govan, in a move which is feared could spell the end of shipbuilding at Swan Hunter. The MoD, had become increasingly concerned about the spiralling costs of the dock landing ship contract.


Vosper Thornycroft “Preferred Bidder” For New Ship Contract

U.K. shipbuilder Vosper Thornycroft Holdings Plc has been selected as preferred bidder by the Ministry of Defense to supply two survey ships in a deal worth up to $150 million. "Our selection as preferred bidder is recognition of our expertise in the U.K. and overseas as a prime contractor," Chief Executive Martin Jay said in a statement. The 90-m vessels are due for delivery in 2002 and Vosper anticipates signing the contract by early summer


Ocean Ships Inc. Wins Navy MLP Operating Contract

Seafarers International Union (SIU) affiliated Ocean Ships to operate 3 new mobile landing platform vessels (MLP) for US Navy. The vessels are being built at General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego; they are the USNS Montford Point, USNS John Glenn, and USNS Lewis B. Puller. Including options, the Ocean Ships contract is for five years. According to the U.S. Military Sealift Command, the new ships “will be the centerpiece of the Navy’s ‘Sea Base’ concept


Austal Awarded U.S. Navy LCS 8 Contract

The U.S. Navy announced a fixed price incentive contract for the construction of a fourth 127-meter trimaran Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS 8) valued at $368.6m.  This is the second ship awarded under Austal’s recently announced U.S. Navy contract for construction of up to an additional 10 Littoral Combat Ships to be appropriated in the following five years, with a total value in excess of $3.5b


Cammell Laird Shares Fall On News

Navy Cancels Combat Ship Contract

Just six months after pulling the plug on a contract to build a combat ship in Lockport, the Navy announced that it canceled a contract to build another ship in Alabama for the same class of vessels. Continued problems with government shipbuilding programs have cost Louisiana shipyards, but there does not appear to be a shortage of other such work to go around, particularly from the private sector. NASSCO, U.S. Shipping Partners Finalize Contract

General Dynamics NASSCO has finalized a $1b contract with U.S. Shipping Partners L.P. (USS) to build nine product carrier tankers. The contract includes options for five additional ships. Construction of the first tanker is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2007, with delivery to occur by the second quarter of 2009. The product carrier tankers or “PCs” will be 183 m in length and 32.2 m in beam, with a design draft of 11.8 m
