Seaarland, Nordic Tankers Sign Joint Venture

Seaarland Shipping Management and Nordic Tankers signed a joint venture that will see both of these companies enter the Handysize product carrier market. The joint venture will involve investment in modern second-hand vessels as well as new buildings. The vessels will be jointly owned by both partners in varying proportions. The first acquisition by the joint venture, the 2000-built 35,820 dwt Hanne, is to be concluded soon


Iran, Venezuela Agree on Joint Operation

Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) announced that Venezuela and Iran have agreed to explore setting up a joint shipbuilding operation. The preliminary agreement looks towards jointly building oil tankers, liquid natural gas tankers and other vessels. It would also train Venezuelans in shipbuilding technology. The deal was signed in Caracas between PDVSA and Sadra Iran Marine Industrial Company. Ties between the two oil-producing countries have become closer as Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez


Britain to Sign Contract for New Aircraft Carriers

Britain is set to sign a long-awaited $7.8b deal to build two aircraft carriers, which will be the Royal Navy's largest ever ships and are set for 50 years of service. The 65,000-ton carriers are said to be called Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales and will enter service in 2014 and 2016. The manufacturing contract is going to a consortium that includes a shipbuilding joint venture being set up between two British companies, BAE Systems and VT Group

Rafael Signs $28m Navy Deal

The Israeli Armament Development Authority Rafael signed a contract with the United States Navy to supply then with 67 Typhoon-type naval weapon stations. The deal, a joint enterprise between Rafael and the American company EBA, is set to yield Rafael $28m. Wärtsilä, Hyundai form Joint Venture

Wärtsilä and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd (HHI) signed an agreement to set up a 50/50-owned joint venture in Korea to manufacture dual-fuel engines for LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carriers. The total investment in the company will be EUR 58 million, Wärtsilä's share being EUR 29 million. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Directorate-General for Freight Transport (DGFT) of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management.
