Liebherr Wins Significant Ship Crane Order

Liebherr reports that there has been a positive trend in the heavy lift crane segement, a sentiment confirmed by a number of significant contracts recorded of late, including a contract for the delivery of six heavy lift ship cranes for the German shipping company Rickmers. Four of the heavy lift cranes are type CBB 4700 with a lifting capacity of 450 tons and the remaining two are type CBB 3450 with a lifting capacity of 120 tons. The six heavy lift cranes are being built by Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH and will be delivered in 2014.

Launched at SMM 2012, Cobham SATCOM made its new standalone Sailor Class A AIS available to order in April 2013. The Sailor 6280/81 AIS System is a black box solution with flexible installation possibilities and features contemporary touch screen operation through the new Sailor 6004 Control Panel. Designed and built to the same fundamental qualities that have made Sailor  such a respected name in maritime communication, the black box design of the Sailor  6280/81 AIS System enables simple installation and operation as a standalone navigation aid or part of an Integrated Navigation System (INS). Installation is easy; just install the black box transponder wherever convenient and connect it via LAN (using the sophisticated Lightweight Ethernet protocol) to the Sailor 6004 Control Panel.

CAT Debuts C175-16 in Germany

On the occasion of SMM 2012, Caterpillar Marine launched new diesel, dual fuel and gas engines. The C175-16 from Caterpillar is the first Cat engine with core ACERT Technology, designed and built from the ground up, according to Robert Hallengren, Marine Products Director, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems. It offers maximum performance along with EPA Marine Tier 3 and IMO Tier II emissions compliance with no after treatment, and is positioned to comply with EPA Tier 4 and IMO Tier III rules.

Intellian Debuts New VSAT Antenna

Intellian showed  itsnew v110GX 3-Axis Ku-band VSAT communications antenna at SMM 2012. Prepared for the upcoming Global Express (GX) Ka-band broadband service from Inmarsat, the 1m Intellian v110GX incorporates a dual-band, carbon fibre reflector and tuned radome for consistent service, whether operating on either Ku- or Ka- band. The high-gain precision carbon fiber reflector is designed to provide optimum performance on either Ku- or Ka- band. When converting the system the antenna reflector does not need to be changed and the RF section is mounted on a single modular chassis enabling quick conversion to Ka-Band operation without any system re-balancing. The new radome has been developed to ensure efficient operation on both bands and minimise signal loss of the radome itself.

Drydocks World Reaches Agreement with ABB

Drydocks World, the most productive shipyard in the Middle East will have a dedicated service point for ABB turbochargers. ABB Turbocharging will now have a dedicated service point for ABB turbochargers in the Drydocks World facility in Dubai, a leading international player in ship repair, ship conversion, ship building and offshore fabrication. To mark this cooperation, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the SMM in Hamburg, one of Europe’s leading maritime exhibitions, where Drydocks World will have its largest-ever representation at the show this year. LNG Container Ship Design Gets GL Approval

Germanischer Lloyd presents an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate to TECHNOLOG for the IPP designed STREAM range of 3,000 TEU to 5000TEU ships. The design of the STREAM 4200 LNG’s 32.25-metre beam allows passage through the existing Panama Canal locks. A draft of 10.50m to 12.00m means the vessel can operate worldwide, including the Kiel Canal (future dimensions) between the Baltic and North Sea. The entire vessel design concept is focused around saving energy. A single screw is directly driven by a dual-fuel, two-stroke, 22.9 MW engine developed specifically for LNG applications by MAN.

New Engine Technologies by MAN HIghlighted

With SMM 2012 as backdrop MAN Diesel & Turbo unveil  technical advances to reduce harmful ship exhaust gas emissions & increase engine efficiency. The highlight of the MAN trade fair booth is the large dual-fuel diesel engine, which is on show as part of a complete engine train: The propulsion system, which comprises an engine, clutch, gears and propeller, spans an impressive 14 meters. With the 35/44DF engine MAN Diesel & Turbo has developed a highly efficient engine which, in gas mode complies with the emission standard Tier III of the International Maritime Organization that will enter into force in 2016, when the emission of nitrogen oxides in certain coastal regions must be reduced by 80 per cent compared to the Tier I standard in the year 2000.

GL launches “GL EmissionManager” - Hamburg Süd is partner in a pilot project. At SMM 2012 classification society Germanischer Lloyd announced the launch of a new product, “GL EmissionManager”, which will allow owners and operators to collect, track and calculate the emissions of a ship in detail for the first time. In cooperation with German shipping company Hamburg Süd, GL have developed the GL EmissionManager system to systematically capture all environmentally relevant ship operation data.

Autopilot-ECDIS Combo Helps Save Fuel

Raytheon Anschütz, with sea weather expert Dr. Meeno Schrader of WetterWelt, show joint system's fuel saving capabilities at SMM 2012. From a graphical presentation of heading plot and corresponding rudder angles, frequency and amplitudes of rudder angles can easily be identified as key indicators of autopilot efficiency. By using the graphical indication of heading and used rudder angle of the NP 5000 autopilot and the easy structured touch screen display, even untrained user are able to adjust autopilot parameters for a more efficient rudder steering. However, only to have manual adjustments is not the optimum, as Andreas Lentfer, Raytheon Anschütz BD Director explained: “Modern autopilots can also adapt to current weather and sea states automatically.

Raytheon Anschütz Marks Crocon's IBS 100th Sale

At SMM 2012, Raytheon Anschütz has honored their Croatian representative Crocon for the 100th Integrated Bridge System sold. The one hundredth delivery of an Integrated Bridge System was for the second newbuild of a Heavy Lift Carrier for Dutch company Jumbo Shipping at Brodosplit shipyard in Split. The IBS will be of the new Synapsis Bridge Control series and in compliance with IMO’s new Performance Standards for Integrated Navigation Systems. Crocon has its roots in the marine business as an agency and representative of world leading suppliers and manufacturers on the Croatian market.

New Fleet Management System Debuts at SMM 2012

Applied Weather Technology, Inc. (AWT) introduces its Fleet Decision Support System (FleetDSS). The new fleet management system is completely customizable, designed to improve efficiency and fleet safety while facilitating reductions in total voyage costs. "The shipping industry is in constant change and the needs of fleet managers change with it. To respond accordingly, AWT has worked closely with its customers to develop its fully customizable fleet management system," said Skip Vaccarello, president and CEO of AWT. Ships are displayed in a Global Mercator projection map with full-screen capability. FleetDSS has an extensive filtering capability that allows companies with large fleets to focus on the few vessels that need the most attention for safety or performance reasons.

New MAN Four-stroke Diesel Premières at SMM 2012

Dual-fuel marine diesel engine newcomer L35/44DF offers full flexibiltiy. MAN Diesel & Turbo introduce its L35/44DF engine, the latest addition to its four-stroke portfolio. Spurred on by developments in environmental legislation and the strict  emission limits resulting from that, the new engine offers dual diesel fuel-gas running and can also be introduced as a retrofit to engines already in service. The first prototype entered its test phase at the beginning of 2012’s second quarter at MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Augsburg facility. A V-type engine version is being developed simultaneously that will enlarge the power-output range of the company’s dual-fuel engine portfolio as part of MAN Diesel & Turbo’s market strategy.

China Keeps Top Position in Ship Building

In advance of SMM 2012, the leading trade fair for the maritime industries, to be held at the Hamburg Fair site from September 4-7, the duel in international shipbuilding is going into the next round – the Chinese shipyards were just ahead again in 2011. According to the latest survey by Clarkson Research, China delivered a total of 1,177 ships with 67.2 million DWT. The closest competitor was South Korea, which had 531 ships and 53.6 DWT, followed by Japan, in third position (462 ships, 32 million DWT). The three major shipbuilding nations from Asia are prominent exhibitors at SMM 2012, the shipbuilding, machinery & marine technology international trade fair Hamburg, from September 4-7.
