CMA To Utilize Transas Z-Drive Simulator

Transas has installed a new Z-Drive Console for the full mission ships bridge simulator in the California Maritime Academy (CMA), in mid June. The Z-Drive simulator models a “reverse” tractor tug with Z-Drive propulsion modules located at the vessel's stern. The Z-Drive tractor tug simulator was provided by Transas USA, and installed by Transas and Buffalo Computer Graphics using a control console manufactured for the Academy by Seaman’s International Union of Piney Point, Maryland. A pilot course at the Academy taught by Captain Greg Brooks, one of the leading experts on tractor tugs and tug operations in the country, was conducted with students from Millenium Maritime, Inc. of San Pedro, California. Captain John Wolczanski, Millennium Port Captain in San Pedro also attended the class as an observer. He said: “This course will be a valuable part of Millennium's operator training. The fidelity and accuracy of the modeling, and the quality of the visual presentation were exceptional.” The Transas full-mission shiphandling simulator for tug operations provides users with excellent tools for both ship assist training tasks and professional tug and barge operations training. The variety of visual and hydrodynamic models of several tug types includes conventional single screw tug, conventional twin-screw tug, cycloid-drive (Voith-Schneider) tractor tug and Z-drive reverse tractor tug


Harley Marine's New Tractor Tug Arrives

Harley Marine Service’s new Z-drive tractor tug, the M/V ROBERT FRANCO has arrived in Southern California. This 100’x40’ tractor tug will enter the ship assist and tanker escort market for both Millennium Maritime and Harley Marine Services in Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors. This tug features Tier III engines and cold ironing/shore power capabilities. It also marks the second Tier III engine on a ship assist/escort tug boat


Bisso Towboat Launches Reverse Z-Drive Tractor Tug

Cecilia B. Slatten, launched in late December at Main Iron Works, Inc., is the new reverse Z-drive tractor tug for Bisso Towboat Co. Inc. The 4,300 hp tug was built exclusively for ship-assist work on the Mississippi River. A pair of Aquamaster US 2001 Z-drives that are powered by twin EMD 16-645-E6 diesel engines, each producing 2,150 hp at 900 rpm, will drive the tug. Electrical power will be supplied by two 75 kW generator sets powered by two GM 6-71's.


Rolls-Royce Azimuth Thrusters Ordered for New Tug

Rolls-Royce has won an order for US255 FP z-drives from San Francisco’s Vessel Chartering LLC, a wholly owned division of Baydelta Navigation. MARCO Shipyard To Construct Third Millennium Class Tractor Tug

MARCO Shipyard Seattle has signed a contract to construct a third Millennium Class tractor tug for Harley Marine Services. Measuring 105 ft. (32 m), the multipurpose tug will be identical to its sisterships, Millennium Falcon and Millennium Star, delivered in February and August 2000, respectively. MARCO Shipyards Signs Local Contract

MARCO Shipyard Seattle signed a contract to build a new tug for Harley Marine Services Inc., of Seattle, the parent company of Olympic Tug & Barge. Recently, MARCO completed a series of nine tractor tugs operating in Alaska, California, and Hawaii. Measuring 105 ft., the new tug will be used by Harley Marine as a ship assist and towing service for the West Coast. A fire that broke out aboard the passenger vessel Caribbean Fantasy at 7:42 a.m. on August 17 has been extinguished, and the vessel has been moored safely in port.   The Caribbean Fantasy is covered under Ardent’s OPA-90, Salvage and Marine Fire Fighting “SMFF” coverage

First VectRA 3000 Tug Delivered

Sanmar’s first VSP (Voith Schneider Propeller) tug, of the new VectRA 3000 series, named Arie A has been constructed for Italian operator Tripmare Spa of Trieste. The vessel has been delivered by a Redwise crew to Ashdod Port, located some 40 kilometers south of Tel Aviv where it will operate
