South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries won $340-million orders to build two LNG carriers for Golar LNG of Norway. One of the ships would be delivered by December 2003 and the other by July 2004, said a spokesman for the world's largest shipbuilder. With the new contracts, LNG orders for Hyundai Heavy have risen to six ships this year, worth about $1.02 billion, he said.

Teekay LNG Partners L.P. has exercised two of its three existing options with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd., (DSME) of South Korea for the construction of two 173,400 cubic meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier newbuildings for delivery in 2016. These two newbuilding LNG carriers are in addition to the two LNG carriers Teekay LNG ordered from DSME in December 2012, which have since secured time-charter employment commencing upon delivery.

The gas and power division of Royal Dutch/Shell ordered two additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to support its growing global LNG business. Shell International Gas Limited ordered a membrane-type carrier from South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and a moss spherical tank carrier from Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Shell did not disclose the price for the orders, but industry sources said the market level for a typical LNG carrier was around $175 million.
China will have a hard time acquiring enough LNG to feed its planned LNG terminals, according to a China Daily report. So far, Chinese companies have proposed building 16 LNG receiving terminals, with as many as 10 of these originally planned to be operational by 2010.
