Beijing Must Obey Ruling on Sea Dispute

China has to comply with any ruling on competing territorial claims with the Philippines in the South China Sea even if it will not take part in case before Hague court, opined Philippine judge, reports Bloomberg. Philippine Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio said that it doesn’t matter if China doesn’t appear, if the tribunal finds that there is jurisdiction, the tribunal will proceed. His country doesn’t want anyone, any state to resort to armed force in settling this dispute, he affirmed. Earlier in January 2013, China has refused to participate in the case before the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague that the Philippines brought.

Deep-Water Rig Can Expect Unfriendly NZ Reception

SV Tiama: Photo credit Greenpeace NZ

New Zealand environmentalists wait patiently aboard their yacht 'SV Tiama' for the arrival of Texas' Anadarko rig 'Noble Bob Douglas' at the deep-sea drilling site about 110 nm west of Raglan. "Out on the Tasman it is still, sunny and calm. The water has been so flat lately that, ironically, it’s technically known as "oily seas" because there’s a sheen over the water. Take note of this though because it’s the only time you’ll ever see me happy with oily seas! This morning as we…

Demand for Offshore Vessels:

Activity in the Port of Lafourche, LA.

Growing In Deepwater Gulf of Mexico. As the feds issue more drilling permits for the Gulf, demand for offshore support vessels in the GOM deepwater sector has accelerated, industry members say. Anger about the government's spill-related, drilling moratorium--which ended a year and a half ago--has given way to optimism recently. The region's shallow-water sector, nevertheless remains slow and gives little cause for cheer. Paul Candies, president and chief executive of Otto Candies…

Late Delivery Expected for CNOOC's First Deep-water Rig

According to a Reuters report, the delivery of China National Offshore Oil Corporation's (CNOOC) first deep-water semi-submersible drilling platform will be delayed, at least for months, state media reported recently. Construction of the platform is expected to be completed in 2011, the official Xinhua news agency cited the company as saying. CNOOC had anticipated the delivery on Oct.1, 2010. This would mean the top offshore oil producer in China has to postpone its first independent voyage, armed with a Chinese rig, to tap deep water oil and gas resources home and abroad. CNOOC has awarded the construction, a $599m deal, to China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation's Shanghai Waigaoqiao plant, the report said, though it did not state when construction will kick off.
