Older Markey Equipment Doesn’t Fade Away ...

It Just Comes Home for New Life. The late W.C. “Bill” Markey, President of Markey Machinery for over 40 years (1948 to 1988) coined a simple phrase for the company’s design philosophy, “Built Hell For Stout”. As a result, an extraordinary number of Markey deck machines manufactured during that era (and after) are still in service today.   As a result, customers often contact Markey for service parts and/or complete overhaul of a winch that is over 50 years old. Much of the company’s older equipment is “cross-decked” (moved to a new vessel) after the vessel it was originally installed on is retired. Sometimes the original vessels find new life in a new role.   In 2012, Markey created an “Alumni” web page, featuring pictures, video, and short stories about “senior systems” that are still in service, or have returned to the factory for refurbishment. Since the company has maintained extensive records and all of the manufacturing drawings for this equipment, new owners are sometimes surprised at just how much history the company can provide on an old piece of deck gear. One such situation recently occurred when Nancy Everds and partner Peter Mann reached out to Markey regarding an anchor windlass on a wooden boat they are rebuilding as a future ocean-based home and yacht:  

Keppel Cebu Fixes to Reefers

Philippines’ Keppel Cebu shipyard, part of Singapore’s Keppel Offshore & Marine, has repaired two reefer vessels – the first was the 7,212 grt Uranus, shipmanaged by London Ship Managers, London. The vessel arrived in the yard for her scheduled drydocking and repairs under Lloyds Register (LR) Class. Rolls-Royce to Supply Podded Propulsion, Deck Machinery for QM2

Rolls-Royce has won two new contracts to supply podded propulsion systems and deck machinery for Queen Mary 2, the new luxury cruise liner to be built for Cunard Line at Alstom Chantiers de l'Atlantique in France. Northrup Grumman Maintain Construction Momentum on Cutter

Unit 1120, which will complete the bow section of the first National Security Cutter under construction at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems' Pascagoula facility, was lifted into place this week. According to NSC General Ship Superintendent Royce Winbush, the unit encloses the anchor windlass machinery room and covers the chain lockers area on the cutter. Two Additions to Markey Engineering Team

Markey Machinery has announced the addition of two members to the Markey engineering team, Srihari Gowri Shankar and Brian Cox. Both have joined Markey as Design Engineers. Srihari recently graduated from UC Davis with a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. His primary focus was in the area of Dynamics & Control Engineering. Maintenance Work Boat from Shin Yang

The Malaysian firm Ajang Shipping recently took delivery of a versatile maintenance workboat from the Shin Yang Shipyard in Miri, Sarawak, East Malaysia. The 246 by 65.5 ft Ajang Haidah has a moulded depth of 31.3 ft with a 16.5 ft design draft. SEATTLE  —  Markey Machinery  announced that it has been awarded an order for a complete suite of winch systems onboard AGOR-27, a new academic research vessel, under construction at Dakota Creek Industries,  in Anacortes, Washington. Sponsored by the US Navy’s Office of Naval Research, this award continues a plan to renew America’s aging fleet of academic research vessels, including ocean ranging vessels like the US Navy’s Knorr (AGOR-15).
