$179M in Port Grants Released

Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge announced $179,025,900 million dollars in Port Security Grants on December 10. The Port Security Grant Program provides resources for security planning and projects to improve dockside and perimeter security. This grant program represents one layer of the Department of Homeland Security’s system of defenses for ports that includes monitoring the people, cargo and vessels entering our ports from the time they leave a foreign port to the time they arrive in the United States. The Transportation Security Administration, the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration evaluated the Port Security Grant Applications and selected the grant award recipients.

DHS Announces $49M in Port Grants

As part of the Department's commitment to enhance security at our nation's key ports and facilities, Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge is pleased to announce $49,429,867 in the fourth round of port security grants. The Port Security Grant Program provides resources for projects to improve dockside and perimeter security that is vital to securing our critical national seaports. $105M in Grants Will Aid Port Security Efforts

As part of the Bush Administration’s ongoing commitment to strengthen security throughout the nation’s transportation system, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta announced $148 million in new transportation security grants. Secretary Mineta said the $148 million, made available by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), will include $105 million in Port Security Grants, $15 million in Intercity Bus Security Grants, and $28 million for Operation Safe Commerce’s pilot program for port security. “The Bush Administration is committed to further securing our nation’s highways, mass transit systems, railways, waterways and pipelines, each of which is critical to ensuring the freedom of mobility and economic growth,” said Secretary Mineta.

News: Port Security Funds Released

Some long awaited funding has finally been released from the Federal Government to shore up port security across the nation. Yester, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, announced new port security initiatives and investments. Funding includes the second phase of the Container Security Initiative (CSI), $170 million in port security grants, and $58 million in funding for Operation Safe Commerce. The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) welcomed the DHS announcement naming recipients of $245 million in federal grants for security enhancements at U.S. ports and related maritime facilities. An additional $58 million was also announced for Operation Safe Commerce.

Port Security Grant Applications Now Accepted

The Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration and the Maritime Administration (MarAd) are currently accepting Port Security Grant applications from waterway facilities, terminals and vessels. All grant applications are to be submitted to www.portsecuritygrants.dottsa.net. An announcement providing details about the program is published at the same site, as well as in FedBizOps (http://fedbizopps.gov). The Port Security Grants program includes grants for security assessments and strategies for mitigating vulnerabilities and for enhancing cargo and passenger security access and control. Additional funds will be announced in the near future for port incident training and enhance prevention and response preparedness for countering terrorist incidents.

Puget Sound Ports Receive Security Funding

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) have granted funding for two major port security initiatives – Round II of the TSA Port Security Grant Program and Operation Safe Commerce (OSC). The funding, which includes Puget Sound’s ports of Everett, Seattle and Tacoma, will receive a combined $5.89 million in TSA Port Security Grant Program funding. In addition, the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma will share $13.3 million in OSC funding. The trio of ports received a combined $5.89 million of $190 million awarded nationally to 199 state and local government agencies, ports and private companies. Port Security Grant applications were submitted in March 2003.
