Romania: Another U.S. warship to come to Black Sea

Another U.S. warship will come to the Black Sea after destroyer USS Donald Cook will leave, Romanian president Traian Basescu told reporters in the Black Sea port of Constanta on Monday. Donald Cook arrived in the Black Sea last week for exercises and operations to improve interoperability, increase readiness and enhance relationships. A French vessel is also in Constanta to show support, Basescu said. Last month, a U.S. guided-missile destroyer conducted naval drills with Romania and Bulgaria in the Black Sea, in a show of Washington's military reach, in operations officials said were planned before Russia's annexation of Crimea. Japan To Fund Romanian Port Study

Japan's International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will finance a study to rehabilitate and upgrade the Black Sea port of Constanta, Transport Ministry officials said. The study will assess existing port facilities, predict harbor traffic patterns for the next 20 years, diagnose the port's IT system, and assess the impact of port activity on the environment. Constanta can handle around 85 million tons of goods per year, port officials said, adding that approximately 40 million tons were handled last year. Analysts believe Constanta could act as a hub for goods coming from North Africa, the Far East and the Middle East and consigned to central and eastern European markets.

Navrom Vessels Sold At Auction

PriceWaterhouseCoopers, liquidator of Romanian state-run shipping company Navrom Constanta, said it sold six Navrom-owned cargo vessels at an auction in the Black Sea port of Constanta. A PricewaterhouseCoopers statement said the six ships, with capacities ranging from 2,800 dwt to 4,800 dwt had been sold "as are, where are" for a total of $1.44 million. Last year, a court in Constanta launched bankruptcy procedures against Navrom due to unpaid debts worth tens of millions of dollars. PricewaterhouseCoopers was appointed liquidator of company assets. Some 320 ships sailed under Navrom flag before the 1989 collapse of communism. In 1999, the company operated less then 20 ships.

Tanker Explosion Kills One

A Bulgarian oil tanker burst into flames just outside the Black Sea port of Constanta on Monday after an explosion, killing one of its crew of 34. Rescuers said six people, including the captain, remained trapped on the 75,000-ton capacity Mesta, which was billowing smoke as the blaze spread. Another was unaccounted for but the remaining 27 crew, had been picked up by rescue tug boats. "The fire is spreading and the danger of another explosion is very great," Vicentiu Tomita, captain of one of the rescue vessels, told Romania's Pro-TV. Other ships were immediately evacuated from the area around the Mesta, which had been anchored 1.5 km (one mile) outside the port for the past 10 days and was carrying no cargo, he said.

10 Die In Tanker Blast

At least 10 Romanian workers were killed in an explosion on an empty oil tanker undergoing repair work in the Black Sea port of Constanta on Tuesday. "Ten blackened corpses were scattered by the blast on the ship's deck," said one of the emergency service crew. An official list submitted to the port authority showed 14 Romanians were registered to refit the 85,000-ton Maltese tanker Anopolis in Constanta shipyard. They were doing welding work to replace corroded metal panels on the side of the vessel, private Romanian news agency Mediafax reported. Gases from crude oil residue inside the tanker may have helped spark the explosion, Mediafax quoted an official at the Santierul Naval Constanta shipyard as saying. - (Reuters)
