NASSCO Starts Building APT’s 4th ECO Tanker

Ceremony signaled the start of construction for APT-4 ECO Tanker, the fourth of five Jones Act tanker ships to be constructed at NASSCO for American Petroleum Tankers. General Dynamics NASSCO signaled the start of construction of the fourth of five “ECO” tankers to be built for American Petroleum Tankers (APT) at a steel cutting ceremony on Friday, May 8, at NASSCO’s San Diego shipyard. U.S. Rep. Susan Davis helped signal the beginning of construction by pressing a button to cut the first piece of steel.

BAE Systems to Expand San Diego Shipyard

BAE Systems announced it will invest approximately $100 million to expand drydocking capabilities at its San Diego shipyard. The investment, which will include the purchase of a new drydock and a range of infrastructure improvements at the yard, aims to enhance ship repair, maintenance and modernization services the company provides to the U.S. Navy, other government agencies and commercial customers, the company said. U.S. Navy Names Research Vessel to Honor Sally Ride

U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced the nation's newest research vessel will be named R/V Sally Ride, in honor of the former UC San Diego faculty member who was the first American female astronaut and the youngest American to fly in space. The ship is owned by the U.S. Navy, will be operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, and will have its home port at the Scripps Nimitz Marine Facility in Point Loma on San Diego Bay. Navy Donates Research Sub to San Diego Maritime Museum

The U.S. Navy officially transferred the decommissioned research submarine ex-Dolphin (AGSS 555) to the Maritime Museum of San Diego (MMSD) during a donation contract signing ceremony Sept. 18 in Washington. The ceremony took place in the Washington office of U.S. Rep. Susan Davis. Ex-Dolphin was decommissioned in 2007 after more than 30 years of service supporting naval research activities from her homeport in San Diego. "As a museum, Dolphin will highlight America's technical expertise and dedication to the advancement of science," said Capt. David Tungett, program manager for the Navy's inactive ships program. Ex-Dolphin was one of the world's deepest diving submarines with a maximum operating depth in excess of 3,000 feet.

Navy Launches Newest T-AKE

USNS Amelia Earhart, the newest ship in the U.S. Navy's Lewis and Clark-class of dry cargo/ammunition ships owned and operated by Military Sealift Command (MSC), was launched April 6 during a nighttime ceremony at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. The 689-ft. ship, designated T-AKE 6, slid into the water for the first time with red, white and blue streamers flowing from its bow and fireworks lighting the sky overhead. NASSCO to Launch Navy Ship Amelia Earhart

General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in will christen and launch the U.S. Navy’s newest resupply ship, the Amelia Earhart (T-AKE 6) on Sunday, April 6, 2008. Rep. Susan Davis () will be the ceremony’s principal speaker. Mrs. Amy Kleppner, Amelia Earhart’s niece, will christen the ship. The Amelia Earhart is the sixth ship of the Lewis and Clark-class of dry cargo-ammunition ships to be built by General Dynamics NASSCO. Construction of the Amelia Earhart began in December 2006. The ship’s primary mission will be to deliver more than 10,000 tons of food, ammunition, fuel and other provisions to combat ships at sea. The ship’s name will be preceded by “USNS” for United States Naval Ship. The timing of the launch is determined by the ship’s construction schedule and the tides of the .

Coast Guard Swears in Members of AMS

On March 8, at the Coast Guard Marine Safety Office San Diego Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-53) and Rear Admiral Kevin Eldridge, Eleventh Coast Guard District Commander presided over the ceremony recognizing the establishment of the San Diego Area MaritimeSecurity (AMS) Committee. The formal establishment of an AMS Committee is one of the key measures of Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002. NSRC Convenes For Ship Repair Conference

Ship repair industry leaders from all three coasts and Hawaii converged in Washington, D.C., last week to kick off the National Ship Repair Coalition’s (NSRC’s) 2002 National Ship Repair Conference at the Washington Court Hotel on Capitol Hill. The annual conference is instrumental to both ensuring Fleet readiness and addressing the challenges that face the domestic industry. “NSRC is a leader in efforts aimed at ensuring the security of the United States while enhancing the safety and quality of life of the servicemen and women who put their lives on the line each day,” said NSRC President Christopher Long. NSRC is a supporter of fully funding critical readiness accounts, such as ship depot maintenance, which have historically been underfunded.

11th MSST Opens in San Diego

Coast Guard Pacific Area will commission a new Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST 91109) Tuesday at 1p.m. at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot here at 3800 Chosin Avenue. Vice Adm.
