Sea Launch Leaves Victoria Shipyards
The Sea Launch Commander & the Odyssey arrived at Victoria Shipyards Co. Ltd. (VSL) on June 14 for a ship repair project. Following a failed launch attempt in January 2007, some structures on the Odyssey platform were damaged and in need of repairs. Due to the unique facilities at the Esquimalt Graving Dock (owned and operated by Public Works and Government Services of Canada), and the highly skilled staff at VSL, the Sea Launch team headed north to Victoria, BC, where the assembled crew, in addition to the staff at Victoria Shipyards were to complete the unique and challenging repair project. The scope of work performed while at VSL included extensive surface preparation and painting, structural repairs to the hangar and doors, and various other heavy equipment repairs to the Odyssey. The Sea Launch Commander also underwent routine maintenance and support activities. Utilizing the TECO Coating Services ASA, a Norwegian subcontractor, scaffolding was erected sequentially on the platform’s supporting columns. Working a 24 - 7 schedule at the shipyard, progress on the repairs and painting maintained a consistent pace towards completion. Victoria Shipyards and Sea Launch staff ensured nothing was overlooked and quality ruled on every operation.
