Svitzer Taps Reinarz as Managing Director for the Caribbean

Maersk's towage operator arm Svitzer has named Matthias Reinarz as managing director for the Dominican Republic and Caribbean region, effective June 1, 2021.Reinarz replaces Dickson Rivas, who is stepping down after a long career with Svitzer. Rivas will remain available as special advisor until his retirement at the end of the year,Svitzer has been present in the Dominican Republic and Caribbean islands since 2010 through a joint venture with Remolcadores Dominicanos, and providing towage in the Caribbean with 23 vessels servicing 10 operations.

Four Damen Tractor Tugs for Svitzer

Global towage operator Svitzer has signed a contract with the Damen Shipyards Group for four ATD 2412 tugs as part of Svitzer’s ongoing fleet renewal program. All four tugs are being built at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam. Demonstrating the advantages to be gained from building vessels for stock, Damen is handing over the first two vessels just one month after contract signing. Svitzer has the first two tugs signed up for port towage operations at its Dominican Republic joint venture with Remolcadores Dominicanos.

Salvage Crews Avert Disaster in the Galápagos

Mammoet Salvage and its partner, CPT Remolcadores SA of Chile, recently responded to a State of Emergency issued by the government of Ecuador after cargo ship Galapaface 1 – loaded with 19,000 gallons of fuel, petroleum products, chemicals and tons of various cargo – ran aground while departing the island of San Cristobal. Recognizing the imminent disaster and threat of pollution to the UNESCO world heritage site, the Government of Ecuador contracted Mammoet Salvage and CPT to begin immediate operations to remove the ship.

Caterpillar Secures Complete Propulsion Systems Order

Caterpillar Marine announced that Cat power and propulsion solutions have been selected to provide an optimized tug package for a 55T ASD tug new build for Remolcadores Marracoi SL (REMARSL). Two Cat 3512C EPA Tier 2 propulsion engines have been selected to power the tug as well as 2x  MTA 523FP Azimuth thrusters. Each Cat 3512C marine propulsion engine will provide 2x1765 kw @1800 rpm of rated power. Auxiliary power will be delivered through 2 x Cat C9 engines. The vessel will be constructed at Freinaval shipyards in Spain. Cat dealer Finanzauto led Caterpillar efforts on the project. Completing the comprehensive Caterpillar efforts on the sale was Cat Financial, who was able to deliver a stellar financial package for the customer.

Two Robert Allan Designed Tugboats Delivered

Tugboats 'Izbaizabal Diez' & 'Izbaizabal Once' delivered to Spanish tug company Remolcadores Izbaizabal by Astilleros Armon in Navia, Spain. The design features a full raised forecastle running nearly half the length of the tug to provide a high standard of accommodation and the best possible sea-keeping capability for operation in exposed conditions. Main Propulsion for the AVT36/70E comprises a pair of MaK 8M25 diesel engines, each rated 2,640 kW at 750 rpm, and each driving a Voith model 32R5-265-2 cycloidal propeller in tractor configuration.

Damen Shipyards Group Adapts Swiftly to New Argentinian Import Regulations

Damen Shipyards, which has already built up a considerable presence in Argentina since the nineties, is working very closely with Argentinian shipyards and looking forward to expanding its activities in the country. Currently, several Damen ASD tugs are being built in Argentina and very soon work will begin on an entirely new powerful pusher to serve the Hidrovía Paraná-Paraguay, the greatest waterway of South America. Between 1994 and 1999, Damen delivered more than 40 of its well-known AluCats to the Prefectura Naval Argentina, as well as several Stan Tenders.

Damen Delivers First Argentinian-Owned Tug

First Argentinian-owned Damen ASD 2810 tug arrives in Buenos Aires. Argentinian towage and harbour company Remolcadores Unidos Argentinos (RUA) has just taken delivery of the ‘RUA Cap. Lucio R’, a Damen ASD 2810 tug. Although Damen’s tugs have operated in Argentina before, this vessel is the first time a Damen tug is owned by an Argentinian company. Established in 1967 and based in Buenos Aires, RUA has a seven-strong fleet of vessels with a smaller bollard pull than the ASD 2810 newbuild.

45 Tonne Bollard Pull ASD Tug Delivered

Soco (ex-Ulupinar VIII), the third of three newbuilding Robert Allan Ltd. design 45 tonne bollard pull compact ASD tugs, has been delivered by Sanmar Denizcilik Makine of Istanbul, Turkey to Caucedo Marine Services, Ltd. of Boca Chica, Dominican Republic. Caucedo Marine owns the sister-tug Haina which was delivered in 2008. The Soco will be fully operated by Remolcadores Dominicanos, owner of the sister-tug Nizao built last year. MAN B&W Power for Repasa’s Terminal Tugs

MAN B&W Diesel A/S, Denmark, has been awarded the contract to supply two medium-speed L27/38 twin engine packages for two escort and terminal handling tugs. The newbuildings are under construction at the Spanish shipyard of Astilleros Balenciaga SA., Zumaia, for the Port of Tarragona-based Remolcadores de Puerto y Altura SA. (REPASA) fleet. The vessels (hull Nos. 392 and 393), named Romulo and Remo, are scheduled to be delivered during 2005 with a three month interval. The first tug’s sea trail runs are scheduled to finish in February. Due to the operational requirements, a highly efficient and powerful propulsion concept was choosen for the tugs. Main engine torque and power is converted into pulling power and maneuverability via two sets of Steerprop SP 35 azimuthing propellers.
