Cropper Named President of Cal Maritime

Thomas A. Cropper, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy, was named president of California Maritime Academy.

The California State University Board of Trustees has named Thomas A. Cropper, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy, as president of California Maritime Academy. "I am pleased and honored to be chosen as the next president of the California Maritime Academy, and look forward to working closely with the exceptional students, staff and faculty," said Cropper. Cropper was among the finalists for the position to succeed retiring President William B. Eisenhardt, who has served as president since 2001. He is expected to begin in his new role as president on July 1 following retirement from active duty.

Cal Maritime Presidential Search Committee to Hold First Meeting

The California State University Board of Trustees will begin the search next month for a new president of the California Maritime Academy to succeed  President William B. Eisenhardt, who is retiring after serving as president of the university since 2001. The first meeting of the search committee will be held in an open forum from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, March 7 at the Rizza Auditorium on the Cal Maritime campus, followed by a closed meeting of the committee at 1 p.m. This is the only meeting of the committee that is an open meeting. CSU Trustee Peter Mehas will chair the Trustees’ Committee for the Selection of the President. The other trustee members of the selection committee include Steven Glazer, Bob Linscheid and Henry Mendoza, as well as Trustee Chair Herbert L.

Eisenhardt To Step Down As CMA President

Dr. William B. Eisenhardt, president of The California Maritime Academy, today announced he will step down from his position at the end of the 2011/2012 academic year. “Although these are challenging times, the academy is in very good shape programmatically, financially, and has an excellent world-wide reputation,” President Eisenhardt said in a message to the campus community. “We have moved into graduate education and maritime related research, have upgraded our academic facilities, are still planning for exciting new facilities, and are financially stable.

San Francisco Bar Pilots Support Cal Maritime

The San Francisco Bar Pilots Association (SFBPA) is renewing and strengthening its long-standing support for The California Maritime Academy through a combination of scholarships and support for enhanced recruitment efforts totaling over $75,000 over the next five years. SFBPA President, Capt. Peter McIsaac said his organization has formalized a five-year commitment to the Academy to underwrite four annually-renewable $2,500 scholarships for cadets pursuing a Bachelor’s degree and licensure as a qualified deck officer.

McAllister Tops $1m in Gifts to Cal Maritime

In early 2009, Capt. Robert W. McAllister (D-42) made a gift of $200,000 to Cal Maritime -- raising his overall contributions to the school over the $1m mark. McAllister, the largest individual donor to Cal Maritime in its 80-year history, has also indicated he plans to bequeath the balance of his estate to the Academy upon his death. “We are extremely pleased that Capt. McAllister has continued make these very substantial and generous gifts to Cal Maritime,” said President William B. Eisenhardt. “His initial gifts have provided substantial scholarship support for our cadets. We will be consulting with him about how best to use these additional resources. They come to us at a time of great challenge and of great opportunity.

500-Ton License Preparation Offered

Dr. William B. Eisenhardt, provost of Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) announced the college has recently received approval from the USCG to offer a 500-ton, STCW 95-compliant mate's license prepatory program. According to Eisenhardt, MMA is believed to be the first organization in the U.S. to offer this license program under the new IMO standards for training, certification and watchkeeping (STCW 95). The program augments other deck officers' preparation programs offered by the college which qualify students to test for a traditional merchant marine third mate's license for unlimited tonnage vessels on any ocean, and a 200-ton, near coastal waters, mate's license.
