John Wolfe, CEO of The Northwest Seaport Alliance, received the 2017 Connie Award presented by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute in Long Beach, Calif., on Tuesday, September 19. Since the formation of the NWSA in August 2015, Wolfe has led the marine cargo operating partnership of the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. “This is an incredible honor for John and The Northwest Seaport Alliance,” said Tom Albro, Port of Seattle commission president and co-chair of The Northwest Seaport Alliance. “John leads through hard work and a well-grounded vision.

Four California Maritime Academy (CMA) cadets were awarded Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial scholarships from the Crowley Maritime Corporation. The scholarships were presented to cadets Andrew Leonard, Griffin Sims, Bonnie Claire Muchnick and Alex Yonkman by Crowley’s manager for marine development and compliance, Vicky Ellis, at Tuesday’s Containerization & Intermodal Institute’s Connie Awards Dinner in Long Beach, Calif. “Crowley is proud to support the education of these cadets and future leaders in the U.S. maritime industry,” Ellis said. Leonard, from Glendale, Ariz., is a senior at CMA.

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) organized seminar focuses on the Panama Canal, the update on U. S. export initiatives and breakbulk shipping. Michael Masserman, Executive Director for Export Policy, Promotion & Strategy, International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, and Rodolfo Sabonge , Vice President of Market Research and Analysis, Panama Canal Authority, are confirmed an luncheon and keynote speakers, respectively. More than 200 turn out to for Port of Long Beach Executive Director Honored by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute. The Connie Award was presented by the Containerization and Intermodal Institute (CII) to Richard D. Steinke, who will retire this month as executive director of the Port of Long Beach. Mr. Steinke was honored for his leadership role in developing the Port into one of the world's largest container harbors. More than 200 people attended the industry-wide dinner event held on September 21, at the Renaissance Hotel.

Long Beach, CA (May 9, 2011) -- Richard D. Steinke, who will retire this year as executive director of the Port of Long Beach and who was instrumental in developing the Port into one of the world's largest container harbors, has been selected to receive the Connie Award to be presented on the West Coast by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute (www.containerization.org). The industry-wide dinner event honoring Mr. Steinke will be held on Wednesday, September 21, at the Renaissance Hotel in Long Beach, CA.

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) will present the 2010 East Coast-based Connie Awards to J. Russell Bruner, Chairman and CEO of Maersk Inc. and James I. Newsome III, President and CEO of the South Carolina State Ports Authority. The evening event on Tuesday, December 7 at The Newark Club will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of CII. The Newark Club event is in addition to the West Coast-based Connie Awards on September 30 in Long Beach, CA, honoring Ron Widdows and Jon Hemingway. CII holds two Connie events each year to accommodate industry leaders on both coasts. Each recipient is being honored for his significant influence in containerization in worldwide trade and transportation, according to Allen Clifford, CII President.

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute, which for nearly 50 years has provided education in the international trade and transportation industry, awarded 10 scholarships to students committed to making a career in the field. The awards were made during the annual Connie Awards luncheon that honored James E. Butcher, Chairman of Höegh Autoliners, and Evergreen Vice Group Chairman, Captain S.Y. Kuo. Crowley's commitment to provide scholarship opportunities to deserving students continued on Dec. 7 as four U.S. Merchant Marine Academy cadets were presented Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships at the Containerization and Intermodal Institute's Connie Awards luncheon in Newark, N.J. Cadets John Buehler, Patrick Delargy, Andrea Morrison and Kyle O'Connor were awarded with Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial scholarships based on their exemplary academic records and financial need. Midshipmen Marie Ebers was also awarded the Containerization & Intermodal Institute's Richard A.

James McKenna, President and CEO of the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), and Robert McEllrath, President of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU), were presented with Connie Awards by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) at the first ever Connie dinner held on the West Coast. “The West Coast industry leaders have long requested that CII bring the prestigious Connie Awards to the region,” said Brendan McCahill, CII Chairman. Dr. Geraldine Knatz, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, and James Spinosa, former ILWU president, introduced Mr. McEllrath.

Butcher, Chairman of Höegh Autoliners Inc., and to Evergreen's Vice Group Chairman Captain Shiuan Y. Kuo. Each recipient will be honored for his significant influence in containerization in worldwide trade and transportation, according to Allen Clifford, CII President. A graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, in 1970 Jim Butcher served as Third Mate with the U.S. Military Sealift Command for one year before joining the Luckenbach Steamship Company in New York. He moved to Höegh Autoliners as Operations Manager when the Oslo, Norway, carrier opened its U.S. subsidiary in 1973 and was a founding member.

The event is in addition to the annual Connie Luncheon that will take place December 7 at the Newark Club in Newark, N.J. Allen Clifford, CII President and Executive VP of Mediterranean Shipping Company, said "Every year industry representatives across the U.S. have been drawn to the prestigious Connie Awards, so we will hold a Connie program on both coasts to meet the popular demand of this event. In an effort to ensure the next generation of career mariners is the best in their fields, Crowley presented four exemplary United States Merchant Marine Academy students with Thomas B. Crowley, Sr., scholarships Monday at the Containerization & Intermodal Institute's (CII) annual Connie Awards luncheon in Newark, N.J. The event, attended by approximately 300 guests, provided the backdrop for the scholarship presentations to Midshipmen Patrick Showell, Donald ("Buddy") Finnie, Joseph Gaudiano and Bradford Lawhon.

“Old sailors never die, they just drop the anchor,” Robert J. “Bobby” Pfeiffer said over a decade ago as he was contemplating retirement. Pfeiffer, one of Hawaii’s most renowned sailors and captains of industry, dropped the anchor on Friday, September 26, 2003, at age 83, at his home in Orinda, Calif., after a lengthy illness. During his 12 1/2 years at the helm of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., Pfeiffer became practically synonymous with business leadership in Hawaii. He charted a course of modernization and diversification, and led A&B through one of its strongest periods of growth and prosperity. At the same time he earned a reputation for leadership –– personal as well as corporate –– in support of charitable and other community causes.

Continuing its tradition of supporting academic excellence, Crowley Maritime Corporation last week presented Thomas B. Crowley Sr., Memorial Scholarships to three midshipmen from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. Mark Miller, Manager of Corporate Communications for Crowley, presented scholarships to Michael Aubry, Michael Attanasio and Jason Craig at a Containerization & Intermodal Institute luncheon Thursday in New Jersey. Midshipman Craig is a Logistics and Intermodal Transportation major from Tinley Park, Ill. In addition to his academic course load, he serves as executive officer for the academy's 3rd company of midshipmen. He is also captain of the crew team. After graduation, Craig plans on sailing and then pursuing an MBA in logistics.

The History of Containerization Foundation, in cooperation with the Containerization & Intermodal Institute and the Smithsonian Institution, will host the official Gala Celebration marking the 50th anniversary of containerization on April 27 in Washington, DC. On April 26, 1956, the converted tanker IDEAL-X departed Newark, New Jersey en route Houston, Texas carrying 58 aluminum truck bodies in frames installed atop its deck. Malcolm McLean, a former truck company owner, had determined that goods could be shipped less expensively if they were first loaded into standardized containers that could be loaded on ships, trucks, or trains. The rest, as they say, is history.

The 1999 Containerization & Intermodal Institute’s Connie Awards were presented to Evergreen Group chairman, Dr. Yung-fa Chang and J. Robert Bray, executive director or the Virginia Port Authority at an industry-wide luncheon at the Marriott World Trade Center in New York. Selected through an industry ballot, Chang was honored for his leadership in founding and developing Evergreen into one of the world’s largest container carriers with innovative round-the-world services serving every continent. Bray, recently installed chairman of the American Association of Port Authorities, is a lawyer who has spent more than an unprecedented 32 years in the port business, including service as VPA’s executive director since 1978.

Midshipman Bennett, of Arlington, Texas, is a senior majoring in Logistics and Intermodal Transportation. She was recently named a national alternate for the British Marshall Scholarship, and is currently competing for a Fulbright Scholarship to further her maritime education in the United Kingdom.

Admiral Richard Larrabee, USCG(ret.), Director of Port Commerce for the Port Authority of NY/NJ, and Alan M. presented annually by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute. Both will be honored at an industry-wide luncheon on December 12, 2002, to be held at the Marriott Hotel at Newark (NJ) Airport. Each is being honored for careers that have demonstrated leadership in efforts to further containerization and intermodalism. Rick Larrabee was appointed Deputy Director of the Port Authority of NY/NJ in early 2000, coming from his command of the First Coast Guard District. During his last assignment with the Coast Guard, Admiral Larrabee was responsible for all Coast Guard operations and programs in the Northeast U.S., from Maine to Sandy Hook, N.J.
