Salvage and Marine Firefighting Verification

Firefighting onboard any ship is one of the most serious situations facing onboard personnel and responders. The containership CCNI Arauco caught fire in the aft container hold on September 1. After four intense weeks, Ardent safely returned the vessel to the owners. Ardent discharged the damaged containers out of the vessels cargo hold. These containers were declared as dangerous waste and required special treatment. (Photo: Feuerwehr Hamburg)

The U.S. Coast Guard regulations regarding salvage and marine firefighting (SMFF) as elements of vessel response plans (VRPs) for tank vessels have been in place since December 31, 2008. On September 30, 2013, these regulations were expanded to include non-tank vessels with a capacity of 2,500 barrels or greater of fuel oil. The VRP requirement was established by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90). be resubmitted for approval of each significant change. The salvage and marine…

TS Taipei Grounding Spill Cleanup to Continue

Debunkering efforts continue for the TS Taipei, which grounded off Shimen, Taiwan last month, causing a large bunker spill after the vessel fractured in the middle. Minister of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) Chen Jian-yu said he hopes to see the removal of all remaining containers on the deck of the T.S. Taipei ship this week itself. The cargo ship was carrying 20 tonnes of potassium perchlorate, 19.5 tonnes of fats, 18.2 tonnes of toluene, 11 tonnes of paint, 8.5 tonnes of corrosive liquids, and 6 tonnes of flammable lubricants, and several empty containers from among the total of 617 boxes on board the ship fell into the sea. The oil spill cleanup work is likely to take another month to complete. The oil spill has polluted 20.3 kilometers of shoreline.

Ship Splits in Two Causes Massive Oil Slick in Taiwan

Authorities in Taiwan are trying to contain an oil spill from a grounded container ship which has split in two off the shore of New Taipei City. The 15,487-ton T.S. Taipei, owned by TS Lines, ran aground in a storm about 300 metres from the shore while it was sailing from Hong Kong to Keelung Port in Taiwan on March 10. "The engines of the ship stopped running on March 10. Cracks began appearing on the ship on Thursday, before it split in two," say local media. The ship split at about 5pm on Thursday, causing three shipping containers to fall off the deck, Coast Guard Administration captain Shen Wen-pin said. On Friday the ship broke apart, releasing heavy oil into the sea.

Galley Grease Harms Equipment – and the Environment

John Paparone

Cleaning up the wastewater stream on marine vessels isn’t just about removing hydrocarbons out of oily separators and bilges. Workboat galleys harbor a tremendous amount of FOGs (fats, oils and grease) that, if not properly disposed of, can be a health risk, damage equipment and add to overall operational costs. Even if vessels are equipped with sophisticated grease trap systems, the introduction of nontoxic, neutral pH biologic compounds into the trap and/or waste stream is a necessary step to reduce toxic buildup and environmental pollution.

New Tank Coating from Hempel

Marine paints manufacturer Hempel announced the launch of a new pure epoxy tank coating, Hempadur 15460, to replace its Hempadur 15400 tank coating. Hempadur 15460 is designed specifically as a tank coating for chemical vessels and is based on amine adduct cured epoxy technology, which the manufacturer says delivers resistance to continuous immersion in a range of chemicals, including crude oil up to temperatures of 80ºC/176ºF. The coating uses no toxic products and can be used to coat all liquid cargo tanks. It is also suitable for grey and black water tanks, mud and brine tanks, refrigerated seawater fish tanks and other vessel tanks.

Treatment Standards Needed for Oily Galley Water

Marine regulators have been urged to introduce performance standards for the separation of fats from galley water before the oily mix enters the onboard treatment process and causes system failure. Currently there are no IMO standards for the separation of fats, oils and grease from galley water, despite the treated water having to comply with the MEPC 227(64) regulation, which does not allow the discharge of any oils. Mark Beavis, the Managing Director of water treatment specialist ACO Marine, said: “Galley water should be free of waste sludge, fats, oils and greases before it enters the treatment process otherwise biological overloading and system blockages can occur, causing system failure and possible pollution.

On Board Fuel Blending

Photo: BMT

Dennis de Bruin, Marine Director at BMT Surveys, explains the current issues and new regulations concerning the on-board blending of fuels. Fuel oils are mainly a blend of oils and other components, for example; aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene and xylene. Gasoline, for instance, is a refined product of petroleum, consisting of a mixture of hydrocarbons, additives and blending agents. Its composition varies widely depending on the crude oils used, the refinery processes, the type of product demanded and its specifications.
