US Navy Intercepts Missiles in Red Sea While Escorting Maersk Ships

Maersk Suspends Five Crew Members as it Investigates Alleged Sexual Assault

Another Maersk Containership Catches Fire

U.S. flagged containership Maersk Kensington reported a fire in a cargo hold while en route from Salalah, Oman toward Suez. The fire is the second reported aboard a Maersk vessel this month. The fire has been contained and all 26 crew members are reported safe and accounted for, according to A.P. Moller-Maersk. The vessel is carrying 3,518 containers (corresponding to 5,616 TEU) and is currently at anchor outside the port of Salalah where it is receiving assistance from shore. The 6,188 TEU Maersk Kensington is owned and operated by Maersk’s U.S. subsidiary Maersk Line, Limited (MLL).

The Board of Directors of Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) has named J. Russell Bruner the next President and CEO of Maersk Line, Limited. Mr. Bruner will succeed John F. Reinhart, who will step down on January 31, 2014 to become the CEO and Executive Director of the Port of Virginia. Mr. Bruner joined Maersk in 1989 and has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of Maersk, Inc. since 2004. He also has been an Executive Vice President of the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group since 2006. Maersk Line has purchased & is reflagging 8 newer and larger containerships to upgrade services provided to its U.S. military, government and commercial customers. MLL's investment of approximately half a billion dollars in eight vessels will improve the quality of service to the Middle East and Mediterranean Sea from the U.S. East Coast. Since 2000, MLL has invested over $1.75 billion dollars to modernize its fleet in support of the U.S. government and military. The vessels are about 10 years younger than the outgoing ships, offering improved fuel efficiency and environmental performance.

Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) wins two awards for its continued efforts to improve the environmental sustainability of its operations. MLL received awards from the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) and the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA). Thirty-nine vessels operated by MLL were awarded Certificates of Environmental Achievement from CSA at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC. To be eligible for the award, a vessel must have at least a two-year period with no reportable spills, no U.S.

Maersk Line's 'Maersk Illinois' makes her first homeport call in Norfolk, Virginia. The call in Norfolk affirmed the value of the Maersk-Rickmers heavy-lift service and brought together customers and constituents who rely on and support U.S. flag shipping. In May 2012, Congress reauthorized the Export-Import BankÂ’s charter to finance American exports and in doing so upheld U.S. cargo preference laws. The reauthorization helps maintain a stable business environment for capital investments, like the acquisition of Maersk Illinois and her sister ship, Maersk Texas.

Maersk Celebrates Name Giving of MAERSK PEARY

Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) and its guests celebrated the naming of its fourth U.S. flag tanker, the MAERSK PEARY, last Friday at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center in Norfolk. The freshly painted, 591-foot ship sat pier-side in downtown Norfolk and was adorned with red, white and blue bunting as distinguished guests, customers, partners, and colleagues welcomed the vessel into MLL’s U.S. flag fleet. The vessel is ice-classed and is aptly named after Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary, famous for his excursions to the North Pole.

MLL to Train 60 Cadets This Summer

For the past 13 years, Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) has hosted more than 900 cadets from federal and state maritime academies to sail aboard its ships. This summer, more than 60 cadets will train aboard 28 U.S. flag containerships and 4 pure car/truck carriers. Cadets will actively participate in all of the daily tasks necessary to safely and efficiently keep large commercial vessels working in international trade, while simultaneously fulfilling the United States Coast Guard (USCG) training requirements to obtain a license. Navy Awards Charter to MLL

Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) has been awarded a long-term time charter of an ice-strengthened tanker to support the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command (MSC). The U.S. flag vessel will be able to deliver fuel worldwide and is expected to serve the research center at McMurdo Station, Antarctica and Thule Air Base, Greenland. The award will add a fourth vessel to MLL’s fleet of U.S. flag tankers, and it offers MLL another opportunity to serve a longstanding customer. MLL began supporting MSC in 1983, and has since extended its ship management, technical and chartering services across the U.S. government. The time charter will begin in November 2011, and it consists of a one-year base with four options. The charter will last 59 months if all options are exercised.

MLL to Support Military Sealift Command Ships

Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) has been awarded a multi-year contract for the operation and maintenance of five container and rollon/roll-off ships in support of the Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) and the Marine Corps Prepositioning Program. These “Bobo-class” vessels, essential in the U.S. and supplies at sea. MSC strategically places military equipment and supplies aboard these ships in key ocean areas to ensure rapid availability during military operation and humanitarian relief. This contract will begin in September 2011, and consists of a base period of 30 days with four one-year options. If all options are exercised, the total contract value will reach approximately $126 million, excluding reimbursable expenses and performance incentives.
