Venture Global LNG to Buy Fleet of LNG Vessels

Venture Global LNG said on Sunday it would acquire a fleet of nine liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport vessels, expanding its ability to sell and ship its own cargoes.Venture Global LNG has exported hundreds of cargoes since it started liquefying gas for export in 2022 from the first of its three planned facilities in Louisiana. (BHGI) announced it has hired Jeb Hamel as a naval architect.Hamel graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. with an M.S.E. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.Prior to joining BHGI, Hamel worked as a naval architecture intern at BMT Designers and Planners in Arlington, Va., where he gained experience creating general arrangement plans and performing stress and weights calculations for naval designs. Leidos Completes Acquisition of Gibbs & Cox

Defense, engineering and IT conglomerate Leidos announced on Friday it has completed its $380 million cash acquisition of marine engineering and naval architecture firm Gibbs & Cox.The deal, announced in February, will see Gibbs & Cox operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary combined with Leidos' maritime systems division.Headquartered in Arlington, Va., Gibbs & Cox is the largest independent ship design firm focused on naval architecture and marine engineering. Leidos to Acquire Gibbs & Cox

Reston, Va.-based Leidos said it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire esteemed naval architecture and marine engineering firm Gibbs & Cox for $380 million in cash, as the defense, engineering and IT conglomerate looks to bolster its expertise as it competes for U.S. Navy unmanned systems contracts. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2021, subject to closing conditions.Founded in 1922 in New York City, Gibbs & Cox has designed some of the world's most well-known vessels, including the WWII Liberty Ships and the stories ocean liner SS United States.

Blount to Build Icebreaking Buoy Tender for Maryland

Warren, R.I. shipbuilder Blount Boats said it has been awarded a contract to build a 90-foot icebreaking buoy tender vessel for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The vessel will be designed by BMT Designers and Planners, Inc. of Arlington, Va.The new vessel will replace the 100-foot, 167-ton M/V J. Millard Tawes commissioned by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942 and in service for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources since 1972. Delivery of the new vessel is scheduled for June 2022.The J. Millard Tawes serves as the primary icebreaking asset for Crisfield Harbor and Smith Island.

Three rescued near Blount Island

The U.S. Coast Guard and good Samaritans came to the rescue of three people Monday after their vessel capsized near Blount Island.  Coast Guard watchstanders in Jacksonville were notified via VHF-FM marine band radio channel 16 at 6:03 p.m. by a good Samaritan aboard the motor vessel Grand Mercury reporting three people in the water and a capsized 15-foot boat. A Coast Guard Station Mayport 29-foot Response Boat – Small boatcrew launched, arrived on scene at 6:25 p.m. and rescued one person from the water while the crew of the tugboat Sewells Point rescued two others. The Coast Guard boat crew transferred the three people to EMS at Blount Island and no injuries were reported. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department towed the capsized vessel to the Arlington Road Public Boat Ramp.

GD Electric Boat Wins Funds for Future Sub R&D

General Dynamics Electric Boat, Groton, Connecticut, is being awarded $8,788,219 for cost-plus-fixed-fee modification P00023 to previously awarded contract (N00014-13-C-0187) for the future submarine science and technology research effort. Electric Boat will perform investigations to develop and demonstrate technology for Navy submarines. With the award of this modification, the total cumulative value of this contract is $23,453,010. Work will be performed in Cambridge, Massachusetts (44 percent); Groton, Connecticut (29 percent); Pawcatuck, Connecticut (20 percent); Airmont, New York (3 percent); Canonsburg, Pennsylvania (1 percent); and future performance in Mystic, Connecticut (3 percent). Work is expected to be completed Dc. 31, 2018.

U.S. Navy Awards Contracts for FFG(X) Conceptual Design

The Navy awarded five (5) Conceptual Design (CD) contracts for the Guided Missile Frigate (FFG(X)). The contracts based on these requirements will facilitate maturing multiple designs during the 16 months of the Conceptual Design phase, and will allow the Navy to better understand the cost and capability drivers across the various design options. Furthermore, this will inform the final specifications for a full and open competition with a single source award in FY20 for Detail Design and Construction (DD&C) of the FFG(X). The entrance criteria for the Conceptual Design phase is that offerors must have a parent design that has been demonstrated at sea and must already be paired with a domestic shipyard for potential production, which will reduce the necessary development timeline.

The U.S. Navy has a balanced fleet, but it wants to grow bigger and better. Will the budget allow both? Maritime Reporter's March 2017 cover story on the U.S. Navy was all about the numbers. There exists several plans to grow the fleet beyond the current number of 308 ships, the Mitre recommendation of 414 ships, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment 340-ship proposal, and the Navy’s decision to grow the fleet to 355 ships, and the Trump administration’s 350. With so many numbers being bandied about, there are even more suggestions on how to get there.

SNA Concludes Annual Symposium

The Surface Navy Association (SNA) concluded its 29th annual three-day symposium in Arlington, Virginia, Jan. 12. The symposium focused on distributed lethality to enable sea control and facilitated professional discussions between military members, industry representatives and lawmakers regarding surface warfare technology, tactics, training and career development. The first day commenced with welcomes, roundtable discussions and keynote addresses by Navy leaders, including Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. William Moran and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Steven Giordano. Vice Adm. Thomas Rowden, commander, Naval Surface Forces/Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, detailed his new Naval Surface Force Strategy and related it to the symposium's objectives.

US Naval Secretary Calls for 355-ship Fleet

In announcing the results of the 2016 Force Structure Assessment (FSA), U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus recommended a 355-ship fleet, including 12 carriers, 104 large surface combatants, 52 small surface combatants, 38 amphibious ships and 66 submarines. The FSA is a year-long effort which began in January that was conducted to evaluate long-term defense security requirements for future naval forces today at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. Mabus’ assessment will be one input to the Navy's FY-2018 30-year shipbuilding plan.

Navy Names Replenishment Oiler After Robert F. Kennedy

Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Ray Mabus announced today that the next ship of the next generation of fleet replenishment oilers will be named USNS Robert F. Kennedy (T-AO 208). A ceremony marking the announcement was held at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston. T-AO 208 is part of the John Lewis-class of ships named in honor of U.S. civil and human rights heroes. "This class of ships would be incomplete absent the name Robert F. Kennedy," said Mabus. "He was a Navy man, a U.S. Robert F. Kennedy, a U.S. Navy veteran, served as the U.S. attorney general from 1961 to 1964 and as a U.S. senator from New York from 1965 to 1968.
