Cruise Sector on Track for Growth in 2018 -CLIA

The cruise industry is expected to stay on course for further growth in 2018, according to the latest State of the Cruise Industry Outlook report from trade association Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). “It is without question that the cruise industry continues on a growth trajectory, gaining in consumer interest and creating a positive impact on the global economy,” said Cindy D’Aoust, president and CEO, CLIA. CLIA said current data shows cruise travel is steadily on the rise with a projected 27.2 million passengers expected to set sail in 2018.

Seagull Extends MLC Training Package

Following keen interest in its first two computer-based training (CBT) modules addressing the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006), training specialist Seagull AS has launched four new MLC-orientated CBT modules to cover the key areas of management, leadership, lifestyle and physical health training. Seagull now offers a comprehensive package of CBT modules, designed to allow shipping companies, ship managers, ship operators and senior officers to achieve and manage compliance with the Convention, which it is anticipated will enter into force during 2012.

SCI Appoints New Ohio River Chaplain

The Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) has appointed the Rev. Kempton D. Baldridge to serve as its new Ministry on the River (MOR) chaplain, serving the Ohio River region, effective June 1. Based from SCI’s Paducah, Ky. Center for Maritime Education, Chaplain Baldridge will serve mariners along the Ohio River plus river regions surrounding Nashville, St. Louis, and Memphis. In addition to his direct care for mariners and their shore-side counterparts, Chaplain Baldridge strengthens a network of River Friendly Churches who partner with SCI to provide ministry to mariners.

Opening Ceremony of K Line Maritime Academy

K Line established K Line Maritime Academy (Philippines) at Pasay City in The Philippines, and Opening Ceremony was held on February 22, 2008 at the Academy with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and many delegations from The Philippine Government, Seafarers Educational Institution and other related interests in attendance. The Academy is the key facility of KLMA and each training course will be carried out in accordance K Line's fundamental philosophy that fosters the development of K Line Seafarers regardless of nationality by using KLMA Basic Training Matrix and Syllabus. As for navigation officers, the Academy will conduct training for prevention of ship collision and grounding in congested waters and narrow straits, using the new ship handling simulator.

RTM STAR Center Provides Carnival With Simulator Training

Carnival Cruise Lines has signed a contract with RTM STAR (Simulation, Training, Assessment & Research) Center, to provide five-day simulator based training programs in Bridge Resource Management (STCW '95 compliant, U.S. Coast Guard, Bahamas and Panama approved), AZIPOD training, Advanced Shiphandling, and Command Shiphandling to Carnival Officers. The courses have been developed, updated and customized to include the latest ship platforms and Carnival specific operating areas. The most up-to-date materials in the subject areas of team building, situational awareness, effective communications, stress management, fatigue, and cultural diversity will be included in the course text. Exercises using the full mission simulation create a "learning-by-doing" atmosphere.

Fourth Day of Rescue, Recovery Operations Continue

More than 2,580 people have been rescued off of rooftops and flooded neighborhoods since rescue operations began Monday, and joint-agency rescue operations are continuing through the day and night. The Coast Guard’s primary focus along the Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana coast will remain search and rescue as long as necessary. Coast Guard assets continue to arrive in the impacted areas. There are 25 cutters off the Gulf Coast, in the rivers, and in the ports and waterways. The Coast Guard cutters Pelican, Cypress and Spencer are currently transiting the Mississippi River to New Orleans to establish a command and control presence and provide a flight deck, fuel and communications to the search and rescue assets in and around New Orleans.
