Port of Virginia Names Edwards CEO

The Virginia Port Authority Board (VPA) of Commissioners today introduced Stephen Edwards as the next leader of The Port of Virginia. He succeeds John F. Reinhart who for the last seven years has led the VPA as its CEO and executive director.Edwards has extensive experience in the global transportation industry most recently as the president and CEO of TraPac, LLC (TraPac), which operates container terminals in Los Angeles, Oakland and Florida. His tenure with the VPA begins on January 19, 2021.“I am delighted to be joining the Virginia Port Authority team in January,” Edwards said.

Port of New Orleans COO Joins Green Marine Board

Green Marine, an environmental certification program for the North American marine industry, elected Port of New Orleans Chief Operating Officer Brandy Christian to its Board of Directors during its annual conference last month. “Brandy Christian’s nomination shows a high-level of commitment to sustainability from the Port of New Orleans,” said Green Marine Executive Director David Bolduc. “We are pleased to have an administrator with her level of expertise sitting on our Board.

Bayonne Container Terminal Upgrade Celebrated

GCT Global Container Terminals Inc. (GCT) says it celebrated the grand opening of its newly expanded, semi-automated facility in Bayonne, New Jersey, which is intended to be the most productive marine terminal on the US East Coast once complete in summer 2014. Following four years of careful planning and construction, more than 400 of GCT’s customers, stakeholders, vendors, contractors, workforce, and staff were on hand to witness the efficiency and optimization that is at the heart of the container terminal. Global Terminal was designed with safety in mind. The semi-automation of container handling combined with the comprehensive training is a major contributor to improved terminal safety and the development of skilled opportunities for the workforce.

GCT (USA) President & CEO James Devine Retires

Global Container Terminals (GCT) has announced the retirement of James J. Devine, President & CEO of GCT USA, at the end of June, 2014. Devine’s retirement brings a distinguished 13-year tenure with GCT to a close, where he was instrumental in revitalizing the US operations. “Jim is an exceptional leader who has capably navigated the company through challenging market conditions. GCT’s success is a testament to his tireless work and vision,” said Stephen Edwards, President and Chief Executive Officer of GCT Global Container Terminals Inc. “We are grateful for innumerable contributions.” In the coming years, Devine will serve as a senior advisor to continue supporting the strategic growth of GCT USA.

GCT Statement on Vancouver Truckers Dispute

Stephen Edwards, President & CEO of GCT Global Container Terminals Inc., issued a statement on Port Metro Vancouver’s trucking dispute. “Due to the backlog of import cargo in containers held on our terminals caused by the trucking dispute, our Canadian subsidiary TSI Terminals Systems Inc. (TSI) has reluctantly issued force majeure (“inability to serve”) to our shipping line customers. This is applicable only to import cargo in containers destined for local delivery. Import cargo to rail and all export cargo are not affected and continue to be served by the company,” Edwards said.

Ports America Appoints Khan

Ports America has appointed Nasir Khan as its new chief development officer who will be responsible for leading the company’s future investments and expansion in marine terminals. Prior to joining Ports America, Khan served as director of infrastructure and energy finance (IEF) at Citigroup, New York, where he led that company’s financing of transportation sector projects in the Americas. During his time with Citigroup, he also served as the director and regional head of IEF in its Sydney, Australia, office. Khan, who is a graduate of Yale University with his MBA from Columbia University, will be based in Iselin, N.J., and report to President and CEO Stephen Edwards. (www.portsamerica.com)

Ports America Appoints Tilden

Douglas Tilden has been named to the advisory board of Ports America Group. Tilden most recently served as chairman of Ports America Group, the largest stevedoring and terminal operating company in the Americas providing services at 97 terminals in 50 U.S. ports. Ports America Group (PAG) is an affiliated group of terminal operating companies owned by Highstar Capital, a leading infrastructure fund. Tilden’s career in the shipping industry began in 1969 with United States Lines. His most recent position as chairman of Ports America Group led to his appointment as senior strategic analyst to the advisory board, which oversees the operation of Ports America Group.

Former Louisiana Governor Indicted

Former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards and his son were indicted on federal charges in connection with a riverboat casino corruption investigation. Also charged in the case were three Edwards associates and a state senator. Edwards was charged with 30 counts, including racketeering, extortion, conspiracy, wire fraud, mail fraud and illegal wiretapping, in connection with extracting money from applicants for riverboat casino licenses, or, in the case of the wiretapping, trying the thwart the federal investigation. The riverboats were Treasure Chest, in suburban New Orleans, Players in Lake Charles, Belle of Baton Rouge and the 15th riverboat license, which has not yet been granted. The maximum penalty is 350 years, $7.25 million fine and restitution or forfeiture of $3.1 million.
