Teachers Learn about Marine Industry, Old Dominion University

Dr. Alok Verma, Director of Lean Institute at Old Dominion University organized two workshops for middle school and high school teachers under a project funded by the Society for Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME). It was conducted on August 5, 2010 for Newport News school system teachers in Newport News, Va. A similar workshop was conducted for Southside school system teachers in Hampton, Va. on August 23, 2010. Thirty teachers from various school systems in Hampton Roads, Va. participated in this workshop.

Shipbuilding Career Day at Old Dominion

The Shipbuilding Repair and Maritime Career Day Event 2010 was held in the Ted Constant Convocation Center on March 30 in Norfolk, Virginia. About 700 students and 70 teachers from different schools in Hampton Roads area participated in this daylong event. This year the scope of this event was extended to include maritime industry. The event offered an educational and fun-filled environment for middle and high school students to learn about various career options in shipbuilding, repair and maritime industries. The event was held from 8.00am till 3.00pm.

MarineTech Underwater Robot Competitions

Dr. Alok Verma, Director of Lean Institute at Old Dominion University organized two underwater robotics competitions under a project called MarineTech funded by the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia (SCHEV). On the morning of July 11, 2009, around 60 people, including students and their parents, gathered at Maury High School for the Sea Perch underwater robot competition. During the spring semester, students built Sea Perch robots with the help of their teachers for this competition. Nine teams participated in the competition.
