Edward Heerema is founder and president of Allseas, which brought the world’s largest construction vessel, Pioneering Spirit, to the market. The company, which also brought innovation to the pipelay sector, has added its latest trick to Pioneering Spirit – its jacket lift system. But Allseas is also targeting deepsea mining and has its sights on the offshore wind market. Two installations from Spirit Energy’s ST-1 in the North Sea have arrived at the Dales Voe decommissioning facility in Shetland, Scotland, with works set to be carried out by partners Veolia and Peterson.The 45-metre high 1,300 tonne steel jacket and 1,200 tonne topsides structure arrived into Dales Voe in Lerwick.The structures will be dismantled and disposed of by partners Veolia and Peterson. Aqualis Offshore has completed the jacket installation engineering of an 1800T steel jacket structure offshore Bahrain as part of the Bahrain LNG Import Terminal. Aqualis Offshore, part of Oslo-listed Aqualis ASA, delivered the project in cooperation with APMC, who were in charge of the transportation and installation contract on behalf of its EPC contractor client, GS E&C. Aqualis Offshore was contracted by GS E&C to provide loadout, transport and offshore installation of the jacket. Aqualis Offshore’s scope of work provided full engineering services related to the loadout,transportation and float off operation, towing, positioning, lowering to the seabed and buoyancy tank removal, including all marine procedures. The offshore installation was executed in May 2018.

Today, Kvaerner and its sub-contractors cut the first steel plates for the utility- and living quarters (ULQ) topside for the Johan Sverdrup field. The topside construction starts on schedule and budget. The Johan Sverdrup development is being executed with a high degree of Norwegian value creation. Kvaerner's efforts to improve competitiveness have resulted in a large portion of the work for the ULQ platform to be executed in Norway. This gives Kvaerner and Norwegian subcontractors a steady activity and also a continued high number of apprentices. In June 2015, Kvaerner in a joint venture with KBR won the contract for the complete delivery of the utility and living quarter (ULQ) topside.

Statoil (U.K.) Limited has awarded a contract to Sentinel Marine Limited to provide a new multi role Emergency Response & Rescue Vessel (ERRV) to support operations on the Mariner field on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS). Sentinel Marine is an Aberdeen-based company, owning and operating offshore support vessels in the oil and gas marine industry. The new 65 metre ship, to be named “Mariner Sentinel”, will be custom built for Statoil and provide emergency cover, oil spill response preparedness and tanker assist capabilities for the Mariner field. The ERRV contract with Sentinel Marine has a fixed duration of five years, commencing in July 2016, and also includes five one-year extension options.

Kvaerner says it is exploring new strategic opportunities to further strengthen its business and has retained Greenhill & Co. International LLP to advise on evaluating all strategic alternatives. Kvaerner has during the first half of 2014 delivered several key oil and gas projects on schedule, won new key contracts and continued to implement cost reduction measures. The company's Board of Directors says it is pleased with how Kvaerner has built a strong position as a competitive contractor recognized for its high quality delivery of demanding oil and gas projects. The Board concludes that the time now is right to explore opportunities  to accelerate the  development of Kvaerner.

AF Group's wholly owned subsidiary, AF Decom Offshore UK Limited, has in a consortium with Heerema Marine Contractors Nederland SE (Heerema AF Consortium), entered into an agreement with CNR, Canadian Natural Resources International (UK) Limited for decommissioning of the Murchison platform in the UK North Sea. MoU includes a major contract for engineering, preparatory, removal and recycling (EPRD) of both tires and steel foundations, in all, a combined weight of more than 37,000 tons. The agreement requires the initiation of engineering work immediately after signing the contract, while the offshore works will start early in 2016 abandonment and dismantling work will continue until 2020.

On Monday, July 28, the topsides were lifted into place on the steel jacket on the Valemon field in the North Sea. Produced by Samsung Heavy Industries this is the first Statoil topsides built in South Korea. The structure sailed from the yard on June 15 this year, and after a quick stop in Åmøyfjorden, Stavanger, last Saturday, it headed out to the field. The transportation to Norway took 40 days. “This is a major milestone for the project, the most important milestone of course being start-up towards the end of the year,” said Bjørn Laastad, vice president for Valemon field development.

Statoil (U.K.) Limited has awarded the maintenance and modification services contract for the Mariner field to Aker Solutions UK. The offshore services contract has been awarded to Stork Technical Services Limited, also based in the UK. Aker Solutions will perform the services for the Mariner field under a five-year contract, anticipated to start in August this year. Stork will commence services in January 2015, also under a five-year term. Both contracts include two 2-year extension options. The Mariner platform is currently under construction and production is scheduled to start in 2017. The contracts will support a significant number of the 700 onshore and offshore positions planned for the Mariner field.

Statoil (UK) Limited has awarded Aker Solutions UK with the maintenance and modification services contract for the Mariner field. Likewise, the offshore services contract was awarded to Stork Technical Services Limited (UK). Aker Solutions will perform the services for the Mariner field under a five-year contract, anticipated to start this August. Stork will begin its services in January 2015, also under a five-year term. Both contracts include two two-year extension options. The Mariner platform is currently under construction, with scheduled production to start in 2017.

Kvaerner says it has established a frame agreement with Statoil for delivery of steel jacket substructures to Statoil-operated fields. Based on this frame agreement, Statoil has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for Kvaerner to deliver two of the planned steel jackets to the Johan Svedrup development off the West Coast of Norway. Subject to all necessary approvals for the project to proceed, early estimates of the total value of the two jacket deliveries will be approximately NOK 3 billion. The Eldfisk 2/7 S topside leaves Kvaerner's yard at Stord today after being completed in April as planned, on time and to the specified quality. In March 2011 Kvaerner signed a contract with ConocoPhillips to deliver the topside for the Eldfisk 2/7 S integrated production platform. The topside was completed in April 2014 as planned, and will be towed to field in the North Sea today. The Eldfisk 2/7 S topside consists of one combined living quarter and utility module and a combined process and wellhead module, with a total weight of 15,500 tons.

Power and automation technology group, ABB, informs it has won three orders worth $60 million for internal and external telecommunication systems for three Statoil projects on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The three contracts have been signed with leading shipyards in South Korea. ABB will be a system integrator of telecommunications on the offshore installations built for the Aasta Hansteen and Gina Krog fields in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea and for the Mariner field in the British sector.

Total E&P Norge AS has awarded Kvaerner an EPSC-contract (Engineering, Procurement, Supply and Construction) of close to NOK 1.2 billion for delivery of a steel jacket to be located at the Hild Field offshore the Norwegian North Sea. "We are very pleased to have won our second jacket this year in tough international competition. This is in line with our strategy, and demonstrates our strong position in the jacket EPC market, says Nina Udnes Tronstad, Executive Vice President in Kvaerner responsible for the jacket business. The contract will be executed by Kvaerner's yard in Verdal, and includes engineering, procurement, supply, construction, load-out and sea-fastening of the jacket and associated piles.

The Bressay heavy oil project on the UK continental shelf is also progressing according to plan, one year behind Mariner, to ensure transfer of learning and synergies. The Mariner and Bressay projects were presented at a press briefing by Statoil’s executive vice president for Development and Production International, Peter Mellbye, at SPE Offshore Europe 2011 in Aberdeen. “After a period of uncertainty, I am proud to be able to say that we are back on track with the landmark Mariner and Bressay developments.

Statoil is to choose Samsung Heavy Industries for construction of the topsides for the Valemon platform. The contract is worth an estimated NOK 2.3 billion. The award has taken place in wide-ranging international competition among pre-qualified suppliers. “We’ve awarded the assignment to build the Valemon topsides to Samsung Heavy Industries,” says Jon Arnt Jacobsen, chief procurement officer in Statoil. “We have good experience with this supplier which also has a good track record in HSE.

The plan for development and operation (PDO) of the North Sea Gudrun field was approved by the Norwegian Parliament on 16 June. Production is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2014. “This is an important day for us,” said Øystein Michelsen, executive vice president for Exploration & Production Norway (EPN). Gudrun is to be developed with a platform resting on the seabed including a traditional steel jacket weighing 7400 tonnes. The platform will have a processing facility for partial processing of oil and gas, before the hydrocarbons are piped to the Sleipner field.

Statoil has awarded Aibel a contract to build the topsides for the Gudrun platform. The contract includes engineering, procurement, and construction of the platform deck and processing facility and mating with the steel jacket. The contract is worth about NOK 2.7 billion. “This award followed strong international competitive bidding,” said Terje Masdal, project director in Statoil. The topsides will be built with a process facility for partial treatment of oil and gas. Gudrun will be supplied with electricity through a cable from the Sleipner field.

BP on behalf of the BP Licences has entered into final clarifications with Aker Kværner in a view to award contract for the steel substructure to the Valhall Re-Development Project in the North Sea. Contract award is subject to partner deciding to proceed and governmental approval of the plan for development and operation (PDO). PDO will be submitted to the authorities at the end of first quarter 2007. The contract value is approximately NOK 450 million. The contract will be executed by the fabrication yard Aker Kvaerner Verdal in Mid-Norway, and includes procurement, fabrication, load-out and sea-fastening of the steel jacket substructure and piles for fastening the jacket to the seabed.

J. (J. Ray) announced the successful construction of an approximately 14,000-ton integrated deck constructed at its fabrication facility on . The North Belut Central Processing Platform (NBCPP) topsides, was built for ConocoPhillips and is the third significant large deck that J. Ray has built on Batam. Work on the project began in January 2007 and at peak of construction, more than 1,200 people worked on NBCPP topsides achieving an impressive 5.2 million man-hours without a Lost Time Incident. J. Ray’s scope of work included procurement of tertiary steel and bulks, construction engineering, fabrication, onshore commissioning and offshore hook-up and commissioning of NBCPP.

Statoil reported that on Feb. 18, the partners in the Gudrun license resolved to submit a plan for development and operation (PDO) of this North Sea discovery to the Norwegian authorities. “The decision marks an important milestone in the continued development of this part of the Norwegian continental shelf,” said Øystein Michelsen. “We’re pleased that work will now begin on recovering Gudrun’s assets.” Michelsen is executive vice president for Exploration & Production Norway at field operator Statoil.
