National Museum of the American Sailor Unveiled

The Great Lakes Naval Museum was officially renamed the National Museum of the American Sailor during a ceremony and sign unveiling at the museum July 4. The Navy's top enlisted Sailor, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (AW/NAC) Mike Stevens, was joined by retired Rear Adm. Sam Cox, director of Naval History and Heritage Command, North Chicago Mayor Leon Rockingham, Capt. James Hawkins, commanding officer of Naval Station Great Lakes, Jennifer Searcy, Ph.D., director of the National Museum of the American Sailor, and representatives from the Great Lakes Naval Museum Foundation and National Museum of the American Sailor Foundation to unveil the new sign in front of the museum.

Coast Guard Foundation to Honor HII’s Petters

The Coast Guard Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced that its 35th Annual Salute to the U.S. Coast Guard will honor Mike Petters of Huntington Ingalls Industries for his long time support of the Foundation and its mission. Keynote speakers will include Captain “Sully” Sullenberger, captain of ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ US Airlines flight 1549 and Admiral Paul Zukunft, commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard. The Master of Ceremonies will be Gus Rosendale, news anchor with NBC 4 New York.

HII’s Petters Honored by Navy League

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced today that Mike Petters, its president and CEO, was honored by the Navy League of the United States New York Council at a dinner last night in New York City. Petters was awarded the Rear Admiral John J. Bergen Leadership in Industry Award for his leadership of HII and the company's achievement in designing and building the ships that help maintain the sea power that assures the United Sates' security and economic prosperity. He was one of five individuals recognized by the Navy League.

F6F Hellcat WWII-Era Aircraft Discovered off Coast of Florida

OceanGate Inc. discovers Grumman F6F Hellcat off the coast of Miami using manned submersible, 2D and 3D sonar technologies. OceanGate discovered a World War II-era Grumman F6F Hellcat plane off the coast of Miami Beach. The plane was found during one of an ongoing series of dives in which OceanGate has been using its Teledyne BlueView high-frequency sonar and high-definition photo and video equipment to gather data pertaining to the artificial reefs in Miami-Dade County waters.

CNO Visits Starbase-Atlantis in Pensacola

Adm. Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO)visited the Starbase-Atlantis youth program while at Naval Air Station Pensacola on May 5. Starbase-Atlantis is a Navy community outreach program managed by the Naval Education and Training Command (NETC). The program serves local community youth by offering fifth-grade students an opportunity to participate in a variety of learning experiences designed to increase knowledge and interest in science, technology, engineering and math. These activities also help students develop positive self-esteem, focus on setting and achieving personal goals and develop a drug-free lifestyle. Teamwork is emphasized throughout the curriculum, teaching students to work and communicate effectively with others.

Stennis AIMD Officer Named Best in Navy

Stennis (CVN 74) Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD) division officer won the 2006 Captain Charles J. “Chuck” Nechvatal Award for Aviation Ground Maintenance Officer of the Year on April 3. Commanding Officer Capt. Brad Johanson recognized Lt. Todd Nelson, Intermediate Maintenance (IM) 2 division officer, in a small ceremony held on the bridge April 5, for making the most beneficial impact on command readiness and mission accomplishments during Stennis’ 2006 work-up schedule. “This is definitely the pinnacle of my career,” Nelson said after being awarded a token of appreciation from Johanson. “It’s a huge honor, but I didn’t win it alone.
