Burning Vessel Diverted to Dutch Harbor, Alaska

The US Coast Guard is continuing to assess a fire reported on the 410-foot general cargo vessel Genius Star XI off Dutch Harbor, Alaska.The vessel is carrying lithium-ion batteries, and the fire started on Christmas Day in cargo hold No. 1. The crew released carbon dioxide into the hold and sealed it over concerns of an explosion.The Coast Guard then diverted the vessel to Dutch Harbor while an HC-130 airplane from Air Station Kodiak and Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley (WMEC-39) were dispatched to assist.The Coast Guard confirmed there are no injuries to the 19 crewmembers.

Injured Mariner Medevaced from Tanker off Alaska

An injured mariner was medevaced from a vessel 220 miles south of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, on Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 17th District command center, in Juneau, received the initial request for the medevac on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. from the crew of the Liberia-registered FPMC 33 after a crewmember on board had reportedly broken his legs.The watchstanders requested the tanker meet a Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak aircrew, forward-deployed to Cold Bay, at a rendezvous point approximately 220 miles south of Dutch Harbor to safely embark the patient.

Injured Crewmember Medevaced in the North Pacific

An injured crewmember was airlifted Tuesday from a Hong Kong- flagged bulk carrier in the north Pacific Ocean, approximately 230 nautical miles southwest of Dutch Harbor, Alaska.Watchstanders from the 17th Coast Guard District received a report from the Xin Li Hia crew at approximately 5:20 p.m. Sunday requesting a medevac of a crewmember who was suffering from severe abdominal pain. The ship was approximately 800 nautical miles southwest of Dutch Harbor at the time of the report. The Xin Li Hia crew was advised to transit towards Dutch Harbor until they were in-range of the helicopter crew for the medevac.Watchstanders diverted Coast Guard Cutter Kimball to the scene…

Bulk Carrier Crewman Medevaced Near Alaska

An ailing mariner was medevaced from a bulk carrier near Cold Bay, Alaska, the U.S. Coast Guard said.At approximately 1 p.m. on Wednesday, the 17th District Command Center watchstanders received a call from the Alaska Maritime Agency in Dutch Harbor reporting the 42-year-old crew member was suffering from a possible stroke aboard the bulk carrier Restinga, 140 miles south of Dutch Harbor.At 2:01 p.m., an aircrew aboard a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft launched from Air Station Kodiak to respond to the incident. At 2:54 p.m., a Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew, forward-deployed to Cold Bay, also launched to respond, while the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel made its way closer to Cold Bay.Both Coast Guard assets arrived on scene at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Containership Aids Offshore Rescue

Unified Command to Tackle Oil Spill in Shuyak Strait, Alaska

Coast Guard and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation have established a Unified Command in response to an oil spill 49 miles north of Kodiak in Shuyak Strait, Tuesday. The spill reportedly occurred Monday morning after an abandoned building collapsed during extreme weather conditions. An oil fuel bladder located inside the building fell in the water releasing a max potential of 3,000 gallons of bunker C fuel oil. Coast Guard, ADEC and Alaska Chadux Corporation personnel are currently responding to the fuel release. Fisherman Medevaced NE of Cold Bay, Alaska

Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced a 44-year-old man

A U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced a 44-year-old man from the fishing vessel Golden Alaska approximately 60 miles northeast of Cold Bay, Tuesday. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 17th District command center received a medevac request from Health Force Partners for a man suffering from stroke symptoms Tuesday afternoon. Watchstanders notified the Coast Guard duty flight surgeon who recommended the medevac. The helicopter crew hoisted the man and safely transported him to Cold Bay for further transport by commercial services to Anchorage.

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today that they will honor the men and women who serve on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sycamorefor outstanding service to the 17th District and our nation. The Alaska Awards Dinner will be held at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorageon Wednesday, August 10, 2016. Admiral Paul F. Zukunft, commandant of the Coast Guard will deliver keynote remarks and RADM Michael McAllister, commander of the 17th Coast Guard District will also address attendees. Alaska Juris Sinks, 46 People Rescued

The Fishing Company of Alaska, based in Renton, owns the  238-foot  Alaska Juris that started sinking in the Bering Sea shortly before noon on Tuesday, says a report in Seattle Times. Forty-six crewmen from the Seattle-based fishing vessel Alaska Juris have been rescued from lifeboats near the Aleutians, but the fate of their trawler is unclear. There were no reports of any injuries as the crew members were transferred from life rafts to the merchant ships, in a fairly calm seas, Coast Guard Petty Officer Lauren Steenson said. Shortly after 9 p.m. Juneau time, the U.S. Coast Guard reported that the cargo ships Spar Canis and Vienna Express had successfully plucked the trawler's crew from the ocean with the assistance of aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak.

Chemical Tanker Runs Aground off Alaska

A 599-foot Norway flagged chemical tanker Champion Ebony ran aground near Nunivak Island, Alaska on June 24. U.S. Coast Guard Sector Anchorage watchstanders received a report from the National Response Center that the vessel ran aground carrying approximately 14.2 million gallons of various fuel products. The captain of Champion Ebony reported that no pollution or injuries resulted from the incident. An Air Station Kodiak C-130 Hercules airplane crew conducted an over-flight of the tanker and reported no signs of pollution in the vicinity of the tanker. The Champion Ebony is a double-hulled vessel that had 24 crewmembers aboard at the time of the incident.

Ailing Mariner Medevaced off Alaska

An ailing crewmember aboard the fishing vessel Seafreeze Alaska was medevaced approximately 195 miles north of Cold Bay, Alaska, Thursday. A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew, deployed aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Midgett, hoisted the 21-year-old man, who reportedly lost consciousness for 45 minutes, and transferred him to awaiting Guardian Flight emergency medical personnel in Cold Bay. Coast Guard 17th District watchstanders were notified at approximately 7:45 a.m. by personnel at Health Force Partners of a medical situation aboard the Seafreeze Alaska. Watchstanders consulted the duty flight surgeon who recommended the medevac. Crewmembers from Midgett rendezvoused with the vessel north of Cold Bay and launched the rescue helicopter crew.

Injured Fisherman Medevaced off Alaska

An injured mariner was medevaced by U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) personnel near Sand Point, Wednesday, the USCG reported. Watchstanders at USCG District 17 command center received a report that a mariner aboard 48-foot fishing vessel Capt-Jay was suffering from a head injury. Watchstanders then consulted with the duty flight surgeon who recommended immediate medevac. A USCG Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew flew 230 miles from Kodiak, hoisted the 28-year-old man from the fishing vessel, and transported him to Sand Point.

USCG Aids Fishing Boat Taking on Water

A U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew assisted the crew of the fishing vessel Alaskan Pride after they began taking on water in Izhut Bay near Kodiak Island, Alaska, Thursday. The Jayhawk crew lowered a dewatering pump to the crew of the fishing vessel, which allowed them to control the onboard flooding and proceed to port in Kodiak. Coast Guard Sector Anchorage watchstanders received a report from the crew aboard the 35-foot fishing vessel Alaskan Pride that their vessel had a possible puncture in its bow and requested Coast Guard assistance once their pumps could no longer keep up with the flooding. The Jayhawk crew responded and delivered the dewatering pump.

USCG Medevacs Fisherman near Cold Bay, Alaska

The Coast Guard medevaced a 36-year-old man from the 252-foot fishing vessel American Triumph approximately 92 miles north of Cold Bay, Alaska, Thursday. A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew forward deployed in Cold Bay safely hoisted the man and transported him to awaiting emergency medical services in Cold Bay. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 17th District command center in Juneau were notified of the man’s injury by the crew of the American Triumph. Coast Guard search and rescue crews were relieved by Republic of Korea assets on Saturday in their search for 26 crewmembers from the fishing vessel 501 Oryong that capsized Nov. 30, 2014, near Chukotka, Russia, in the Bering Sea. The Coast Guard completed more than 24 searches covering more than 4,576 square miles utilizing two cutters, two helicopters, and multiple airplanes. Coast Guard crews will continue to partner with the Republic of Korea to provide search and rescue planning support. U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) search and rescue crews were relieved by Republic of Korea assets on Saturday in their search for 26 crewmembers from the fishing vessel 501 Oryong that capsized Nov. 30, 2014, near Chukotka, Russia, in the Bering Sea. The USCG completed more than 24 searches covering more than 4,576 square miles utilizing two cutters, two helicopters, and multiple airplanes. Coast Guard crews will continue to partner with the Republic of Korea to provide search and rescue planning support. Two Republic of Korea Navy P-3 Orion aircraft joined the search for survivors on Dec. 6, 2014.

Mariner Medevaced from Bulker near Alaska

A U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) helicopter crew medevaced a mariner from a 623-foot bulk carrier located approximately 75 miles southeast of Cold Bay, Alaska, Sunday. Coast Guard 17th District Command Center watchstanders received a call from the crew of ALLSEAS MARINE S.A.’s bulk carrier Mykonos Seas requesting medical assistance for an injured crewmember. The duty flight surgeon recommended the medevac, and the USCG Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk crew was launched out of Cold Bay to conduct the rescue. The helicopter crew hoisted the mariner and transferred him to commercial medical services in Cold Bay for further transport to Anchorage and additional medical care. "This case illustrates the importance of forward deploying our hoist capable helicopters in Alaska," said Lt. Cmdr.
