The European Commission (EC) said Wednesday that it had fined four maritime car carriers 395 million euros (U.S. $486.5 million). Four shipping companies – CSAV, K Line, NYK and WWL-Eukor – have been fined by the EC for collusion in operating a cartel on the car carrier trades, in breach of EU antitrust rules. All companies acknowledged their involvement in the cartels and agreed to settle the cases. Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy said:"The Commission has sanctioned several companies for colluding in the maritime transport of cars and the supply of car parts.The three separate decisions taken today show that we will not tolerate anticompetitive behaviouraffecting European consumers and industries.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics has signed a concession agreement with the Port of Zeebrugge to develop 49 hectares of land known as the Bastenaken West property located in the inner port. With this concession, in place until 2043, the company will nearly double its terminal footprint. EU antitrust regulators are set to fine Nippon Yusen KK (NYK) and several other Japanese shippers as well as Norwegian Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics ASA (WWL) in the coming weeks for rigging bids for shipping cars, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Two former and one current executive of the shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics AS (WWL) have been indicted on charges of fixing the prices of some international ocean shipping, the U.S. Justice Department said on Tuesday. Former executives Arild Iversen and Anders Boman were indicted in November 2016 along with current executive Kai Kraass, the department said. The indictment was unsealed on Tuesday. Iversen is a former WWL chief executive, Boman was head of the Asian business for WWL and Kraass was Head of Commercial, Region Europe, according to the complaint filed with the U.S.

It creates a certain unease over what 2017 might have in store for us, given that the words have gotten bigger and the tone sharper in both political and diplomatic dialogue across the globe. It certainly makes practicing the dark art of making predictions of the future even more terrifying than usual. However, there are a few topics that appear more than certain to be part of the 2017 tapestry than others. The outcomes of both the Brexit referendum as well as the US election both stem from the same core. The disenfranchised groups in society, who have seen their jobs disappear and their economic foundation eroded, blame globalization, trade and open borders as the cause of their situation.

WWL recently became the first RoRo shipping company to transport heavy breakbulk cargo weighing more than 92 tonnes from Japan to the United States. Until recently, Japanese ports only allowed a maximum cargo weight of 92 tonnes including roll trailer. Following negotiations with port authorities, this restriction was lifted to extend the benefits of RoRo to customers with even heavier breakbulk cargo. The first customer to benefit from the extended weight limit was a Japanese company that urgently needed to ship two generators weighing 242 tonnes each from Yokohama to Newport News, Virginia, in the United States. The challenge put WWL’s team to the test, and they quickly came up with a transport method to fit the customer’s requirements.

Port of Hueneme’s first Post-Panamax ship was greeted by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines (WWL) company leaders and Port officials during an occasion marking a paradigm shift in how the widened Panama Canal will bring a new class of vessels to the Port of Hueneme. This maiden voyage of the M/V Thalatta marks a new milestone to support the Port’s and its industry partners’ agenda. With the launch of Themis, WWL is now half way into the newbuilding order totalling eight new RoRo vessels commencing service between 2015 and 2017.

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved a $1.17 billion fiscal year (FY) 2016/17 annual budget for the Port of Los Angeles. As in years past, budget allocations closely align and support the four key objectives of the Port’s 2012-2017 Strategic Plan, which include: development of a world-class infrastructure that promotes growth; implementation of an efficient, secure and environmentally sustainable supply chain; improved financial performance of Port assets; and strengthened relationships with Port stakeholders. “Our Port Strategic Plan has been a great tool to keep us consistently focused and committed to our infrastructure and operational priorities,” said Ambassador Vilma Martinez, Harbor Commission President.

China COSCO Shipping has won the draw for its container vessel Andronikos to make the ceremonial first transit through the Expanded Panama Canal during the waterway’s inauguration on Sunday, June 26. The vessel, which has a maximum capacity of 9,400 TEUs, is 8.25 meters in beam and 299.98 meters in length. The draw took place this morning at the Panama Canal Administration Building, in which a Notary Public served as witness, among invited attendees. Also participating in the draw was the Norwegian/Swedish shipping line Wallenius Wilhemsen Lines (WWL) with its car carrier Thalatta.

Administration to serve the Port of Baltimore for another 30 years to 2045. The contract is expected to generate 2,500 jobs over the next three decades. Baltimore is the leading auto and RoRo port in North America, and WWL ranks as its top RoRo customer, with more than 200 people employed at its terminal. The new contract, which replaced a 20-year deal set to expire in 2021, supports nearly 1,000 jobs at the port and another 1,500 jobs created by WWL’s business in the state. Governor Larry Hogan, who was among the 150 guests attending the event on December 3, spoke of the importance of WWL’s commitment to the port as well as the larger community.

The expansion of the Panama Canal has opened up an opportunity for WWL to develop its next generation RoRo carriers. Due to its importance to international trade, the size of the Panama Canal has long been a design constraint when it comes to shipping vessels. With wider locks currently under construction, however, WWL decided to begin designing a new RoRo carrier that was not only bigger, but also better adapted to today’s industry demands and customer needs. “Now that we have the freedom to expand the width of our carriers, we can also implement other improvements as well, so we began a process of wide consultation with our customers, maritime authorities and technical experts,” says Geir Fagerheim, Head of Fleet Management, WWL.

ICO and AET, the two ro/ro terminals in the port of Antwerp, are now also connected to the e-Desk. The Antwerp Port Community System (APCS) introduced the e-Desk for containers already in 2012, and this year the successful collaboration has been extended to rolling stock. The port of Zeebrugge (ICO and WWL) started the e-Desk for ro/ro in February, and now the Antwerp terminals are following suit. All exports of new and second-hand vehicles and exports or transit of containers can now be declared electronically, so that paper declarations and accompanying documents are no longer necessary. Each player who has four obligatory data items that form part of the export declaration can enter these parameters in the e-Desk.
