Dales Marine Services Buys 20 Welding Generators

U.K. based ship repair and marine services form Dales Marine Services announced it has acquired 20 new welding generators from MB Plant, Peterhead.The newly acquired welding generators are replacements for older machines and will be utilized on-site at Dales Marine facilities including Aberdeen, Leith, Greenock and Troon, as well as remotely at clients' sites, as required.Dales Marine said its main facilities have been experiencing a steady increase in the number of vessels coming to their docks for scheduled maintenance and repairs…

Construction Begins on First F126 Frigates for the German Navy

Damen Naval and project partner NVL Group held a steel cutting ceremony at the Peene shipyard in Wolgast, Germany for the first new multipurpose frigates for the German Navy.“We are proud to be able to start cutting steel entirely on schedule on December 5. Meyer Werft Bags Its First Offshore Order

German shipbuilder Meyer Werft reports it has secured its first order within the growing offshore converter platform business.The Papenburg shipyard—part of the Meyer Group, known primarily for building cruise ships—will carry out the majority of the steel work for converter platforms for the DolWin4 and BorWin4 offshore connections as well as BalWin1 and BalWin2, all destined for the North Sea."This order is a milestone for us in our entry into the construction of converter platforms, which we will also build at Neptun Werft in Rostock in the future.

USCG's First Polar Security Cutter to be Named Polar Sentinel

The first ship in the U.S. Coast Guard's Polar Security Cutter program will be named Polar Sentinel, Commandant Admiral Karl Schultz revealed in his 2022 State of the Coast Guard Address, delivered Thursday in Clearwater, Fla.The Polar Security Cutter program is planned to replace the Coast Guard's aging fleet of icebreakers, including the 46-year old heavy icebreaker USCGC Polar Star and 23-year-old medium icebreaker USCGC Healy.Pascagoula, Miss. shipbuilder Halter Marine has been awarded contracts to build the first two Polar Security Cutters, and the U.S.

Ports of New Orleans, Caddo-Bossier Work Together to Move Cargo on the Mississippi

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) discharged 300 steel coils on June 10, 2021, to barge at Coastal Cargo breakbulk and heavy-lift terminal at the Louisiana Ave. Complex that were transported to the barge from the SK Shipping Star Challenger and made their way upriver to be off-loaded at the Port of Caddo-Bossier in Shreveport.“This is a great example of two Louisiana ports coming together to facilitate commerce in the State and moving cargo on the Mississippi River,” said Brandy D. Christian President and CEO of the Port of New Orleans and CEO of the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad.

This month MR dives inside the $60 million refit of RV Roger Revelle, a project which leverages a treasure trove of ‘lessons learned’ from recent refits in the academic research vessel fleet and highlights the value of slimming the vendor list.Research vessel (R/V) Roger Revelle is back at work after a midlife refit involving upgrades from top to bottom, bow to stern. The ship is owned by the Office of Naval Research and has been operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego since 1996. It is one of the largest ships in the U.S.

Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam (DSAm) completed a conversion project for Norwegian company Eidsvaag which saw a platform supply vessel (PSV) transformed into a fish feed carrier dubbed Eidsvaag Opal.Among other things, Damen was required to extend the vessel by 5 meters, which involved the yard cutting the hull in two and inserting in new steel sections. Damen was also required to widen the beam of the vessel – using a series of side boxes – to give additional stability and cargo capacity.

Nexans Aurora Cable Layer Blocks Fall into Place

All the grand blocks for the Cable Laying Vessel (CLV) ‘Nexans Aurora’ have now been assembled at the hull yard, CRIST, Norway's Ulstein has informed. "Work tasks such as some steelwork, outfitting, and paintwork now need to be carried out before the hull can be towed to Ulstein Verft, Norway, for finalizing," Ulstein said Tuesday.Nexans Aurora is a DP3 cable laying vessel that will be outfitted for power cable laying, including bundle laying, jointing and repair, and cable system protection and trenching.The contract between Nexans and Ulstein Verft was announced in July 2018.

Ulstein Verft Builds Bernhard Schulte’s 3rd Vessel

Norwegian shipbuilder and ship designer Ulstein has started construction work on Bernhard Schulte Offshore’s third Ulstein-designed offshore wind vessel at Ulstein Verft.According a press note, initiate work tasks such as steel outfitting, mechanical outfitting, electrical steel work, piping and insulation, have now commenced, and cable pulling will start within a few days.Bernhard Schulte has previously (2016 and 2017) received two offshore wind vessels from Ulstein. The ship owner was the first to order and introduce to the market the novel X-STERN aft design, which improves the operational flexibility and work conditions for the ship’s crew at the offshore wind farms.

Scotline Orders Third Newbuild

U.K based shipping company Scotline Marine Holdings announced that it has  ordered a third newbuild vessel from Dutch shipyard Royal Bodewes which is due for delivery by the end of 2020."The new vessel will adopt the name ‘Scot Ranger’ which has not been used since we sold the previous vessel last year," it said.This vessel will be a sister to the Scot Carrier (launched November 2018) and the Scot Explorer (due for launch November 2019).Although the same design of vessel, the new Scot Ranger will be ice class 1A. This makes her ideal for our liner services out of the Baltic, the company said.The build of the Scot Explorer is progressing well at Royal Bodewes yard in Hoogezand."She is our second newbuild with Bodewes.

Portugal’s Naval Rocha Shipyard Reports Robust Activity

Wharf-Building Equipment Arrives Antarctica

A cargo ship loaded with 4,500 tonnes of steel and construction equipment required to build a new Antarctic wharf has arrived at British Antarctic Survey (BAS)'s Rothera Research Station.Staff awaiting its arrival cheered as the DS Wisconsin pulled alongside, guided for the final few hours through sea ice by the ice-strengthened RRS Ernest Shackleton.
