Maersk Taps ABS to Help Improve Cargo Safety

Ocean carrier Maersk Line has selected classification society ABS to help identify and evaluate potential hazards posed from dangerous cargoes stowage on containerships.In order to better understand key risks associated with cargo, ABS lead a workshop that assembled industry stakeholders to conduct a Hazard Identification (HAZID) study to identify hazards associated with dangerous goods stowage on a range of containership designs, many which are not fully addressed by the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.

ABS Names New Chief Engineer

Montaruli steps up at ABS as technical engineering authority. ABS, a provider of classification to the global marine and offshore industries, announced the appointment of Bret Montaruli as Vice President and Chief Engineer. In his new role, Montaruli will be responsible for overseeing the interpretation, application and compliance with the ABS Rules across all ABS Engineering offices worldwide. Montaruli steps into his new position February 15, 2016 to replace Jim Gaughan, who is retiring from ABS after 30 years of service.

ABS Releases Floating Offshore Wind Turbines Guide

ABS released the ABS Guide for Building and Classing Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Installations to provide the most comprehensive requirements to date. Based on the results of case studies and existing technologies, the new guide provides criteria for the design, construction, installation and survey of permanently sited floating offshore wind turbines and includes specific guidelines for areas subject to cyclonic storms. ABS, SCUT to Coordinate Research Projects

Signed letter of intent lays the groundwork for collaboration on educational, outreach activities related to shipbuilding, offshore and marine engineering. ABS has signed a letter of intent for cooperative research and development projects with the South China University of Technology (SCUT) through the ABS China Offshore Technology Center (COTC) in Shanghai. ABS Vice President of Corporate Offshore Technology Bret Montaruli and Vice President of SCUT Zhu Min, recently signed the agreement at the SCUT campus in Guangzhou, China. ABS has had a long standing commitment to education and a history of establishing valuable relationships with research facilities.

ABS Classes New-Build GSF ‘Constellation I’ Jack-Up

Continued frontier development is driving industry's need to refurbish and significantly modify many of the world's 388 active jack-up units for novel projects, improved efficiency and sometimes harsh environments. Frontier development also is spurring the building of new units. Responding to the technical challenges posed by these modifications and the need for new designs, ABS has released a detailed technical Commentary to its Rules for Building and Classing Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs). The commentary—a further step in providing industry more specific direction on how to apply ABS Rules to these new projects—particularly focuses on jack-ups, which are the predominant type of drilling unit addressed in the Rules for Building and Classing MODUs.
