ABS Elects New Council and Committee Members

At the 151st Annual Meeting of the Members of ABS, and the subsequent meeting of the ABS Council, industry leaders were elected to serve on a number of bodies that contribute to the operation of the classification society as it fulfills its mission of promoting the security of life and property and preserving the natural environment. Westgarth Joins Seagull Board

Capt. Graham Westgarth, who becomes a non-executive Seagull Director, has over 40 years industry experience including 18 years at sea (five years as a Ship’s Master). From 2001 to 2010, he was responsible for Teekay’s 5,000 sea and shore staff and the technical management of 200 vessels, as the company extended beyond its conventional tanker interests to shuttle tankers, FPSOs, FSOs and LNG vessels. He also oversaw development of Teekay’s industry accredited Competence Management System, working closely with Seagull.

Westgarth Joins Seagull Board

Intertanko Chairman and former Teekay President Marine Services Capt. Graham Westgarth has joined the board of Seagull AS, provider of complete training solutions for seafarers. Capt. Westgarth, who becomes a non-executive Seagull Director, has more than 40 years industry experience including 18 years at sea (five years as a Ship’s Master). From 2001 to 2010, he was responsible for Teekay’s 5,000 sea and shore staff and the technical management of 200 vessels as the company extended beyond its conventional tanker interests to shuttle tankers, FPSOs, FSOs and LNG vessels.

ABS Elects New Council

At the 150th Annual Meeting of the Members of ABS, three industry leaders were elected to the ABS Council. Following the Annual Meeting, the ABS Council met and elected industry leaders to both its Marine and Offshore Technical Committees. Individuals serving on the ABS Council and the Technical Committees help guide the class society in fulfilling its mission of promoting the security of life, property and the natural environment. “Classification represents the concept of self-regulation for the marine and offshore industry,” said ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.

ABS Adds to Membership

At the recent ABS Council meeting in N.Y., 40 prominent members of the shipping and offshore industries were elected as new members of the international classification society. The ABS Council also elected two new members to the society’s Technical Committee. “ABS governance is vested in a membership comprised of distinguished individuals drawn from the international shipping, shipbuilding and offshore industries, from academia, the insurance sector and other related disciplines,” said ABS Chairman and CEO Robert D. Somerville Takes Over at ABS

Robert D. Somerville, has been elected Chairman of ABS. He replaces Frank J. Iarossi who has stepped down after 14 years at the head of the world’s third largest classification society. The previously announced and carefully planned transition took effect with the approval of Somerville in the post by the ABS Council following the Annual Meeting of the society in New York today. The Council is a 60 person body, representative of the maritime industry, drawn from the more than 800 worldwide members of ABS. The Council also confirmed Somerville’s re-election as Chief Executive Officer of the classification society. Somerville, a 34 year veteran of ABS had served as President of the society since 1993.

ABS Elects Wiernicki to Board

Christopher J. Wiernicki was elected to the ABS Board of Directors by the ABS Council following the Annual Meeting of the members of the international classification society. Wiernicki was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS on January 1. He is also an elected Corporate Officer of the society. Prior to his current appointment, Wiernicki served as President and COO of ABS Europe Ltd, the Division of the society responsible for activities throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Wiernicki has also served as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for ABS and as President and Chief Operating Officer of ABSG Consulting Inc., an affiliate of ABS and the principal operating subsidiary of ABS Group of Companies, Inc.

ABS Elects Kurz And Kwok To Board Of Directors

Gerhard E. Kurz, president and CEO, Seabulk International, Inc. and Joseph Kwok, COO, Neptune Orient Lines Ltd. were elected to the ABS Board of Directors, by the ABS Council, following the recent Annual Members Meeting of the classification society in New York. Kurz is responsible for the revitalization of Seabulk International, Inc. (formerly Hvide Marine Inc.), and Kwok is COO of the NOL group of companies and also its CEO of chartering. He is responsible for the entire group's fleet operations. Also elected to the ABS Council at the Annual meeting were Choo Chian Beng, chairman and managing director, Keppel FELS; Mustafa A. Jalali, president and CEO, Aramco Services Company; Dr. Frank F.H. Lu, chairman, Taiwan Navigation Co.; and A.P. (Paul) Revere, president, Sea River Maritime.

Michael Carthew, President, Chevron Texaco Shipping and Dean Taylor, President and CEO, Tidewater Marine were elected to the ABS Board of Directors, by the ABS Council, following yesterday's Annual Members Meeting of the classification society in New York. General Dynamics announced the appointment of John F. "Dugan" Shipway, 60, as president of Bath Iron Works, reporting to Michael W. Toner, executive vice president of General Dynamics Marine Systems group. Shipway succeeds Allan C. Cameron, 57, who has announced his retirement. Cameron had been president of Bath Iron Works since 1996. Edwin W. Stephan, a founder and former longtime president and vice chairman of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., will retire from the Board of Directors following the company's May 20 annual meeting in Miami.

ABS Council Supports Maritime Security Initiative

Strong support for a proposed comprehensive series of maritime security initiatives was expressed by the ABS Council at its semi-annual meeting in New York on November 12, following detailed presentations on the subject by ABS executives. The 60-strong Council is drawn from the more than 800 members of the classification society to provide guidance to the Chairman and management of the society. It includes prominent members of the shipowning, insurance and regulatory sectors. "New demands will be placed on classification societies when the proposed IMO International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) comes into effect," said ABS Chairman and CEO Frank J. Iarossi after the meeting.
